Is there anything I can do?

A bit worried but hope it finds it way home and was just wandering. Driving home tonight with OH we saw a German shepherd wandering off then on to the road. Seemed young, not well groomed but rather large and did have a collar on. OH stopped car and after assuring him I'd be ok I got out to see if I could find anything else out. I walked slowly and stopped a few feet away (not knowing the dog or anything) so give him a choice. He bolted. Then stopped a few feet away. Talked quietly to him and walked forward, stopping again and then he bolted. Carried on for a bit, he seemed nervous and didn't know where he was or the area to be honest. He didn't seem aggressive. OH is worried as he doesn't know the dog (saw in his village where he knows everyone) and what could happen to him. Hopefully the dog will be ok but concerned about it walking on road.

Is there anything I can do right now?

Have you tried pulling over and opening the car boot? I've caught two loose dogs on roads this way, a great majority of farm dogs and many pet dogs will leap happily into an open car. One did turn out to be very nasty and had to be poled out but I got him in hands free.

I have caught a few that have been abandoned round here, and as suggested above I have found that leaving car door open and some food inside, they do go in, one GSD did take 3 days to pluck up courage.

Do you have a local dog warden you can advise so they can have a look for it?

I would report this on a FB page, there was a LOST long legged GSD being posted around, there was a picture included.
Maybe call the dog warden and local vets and check dog lost and add (a sighting) post at least then if genuinely lost they may know which area to head or indeed if he/she has strayed far.

Please put details on dog lost as hopefully the owners will read the info and check out the area. Thank you for caring and trying to catch the dog rather than just driving on!!

Have you phoned a local dog warden or police non emergency number? I would also pop the details on something like dog lost.

What colour was it? There was a sable (grey) GSD posted on Dogslost as well this week (NOT Woody posted above, although he looks similar), and a brother sister pair, one black and one longcoat with soft ears.

It was in the Selby area, he was dark (is say black) and had a brown belly. Have let people know that have been suggested. Thanks for your help going to see if the dogs around there tonight.
