I've just nearly hit a dog on a main road near to my home, stopped and put her in my car ! It was that or she would have been run over - problem is what do I do with her now ?
I've got her in the house and she's lovely but I can't keep her. I suppose i should take her to the police station but I'm worried what would happen to her - any other ideas ?

Local councils have taken over responsibility for stray dogs from the police now, so the police dont get involved any more? Having said that I should think that out of hours response would be practically zero, so perhaps your local animal rescue centre might be able to help??? Or if you are able to keep the dog until Monday then ring the council then?

I would suggest taking the dog to your local vets to see if it is microchipped, but dont suppose you would be able to do that until Monday either

Just be careful.... you might end up like zoe did after we 'helped' a stray dog....

I realise not every dog is a bad one..... but please take extra care...... this dog seemed friendly until it attacked without warning.....

If you fone the police they wont come and get it as they have no facilities to look after it, and the council dog warden does not work at the weekends...... Lost Paws came and got this dog....... but only when I hadf to call 999 coz no one else would help

thanks for your replies and sorry about what happened to your daughter, it's made me think but this dog seems great - hard to believe anyone has just dumped her but it does seem as if they have ........I'm feeling a bit stuck with her now, especially like you say that it's the weekend and the police won't help. Part of me now wishes i had just kept going like everybody else

Try ringing the local police station.... and try to get the name of the most local independant dog warden/collector.

The one that got our stray was in Portsmouth/Southampton and we are in Aldershot..... so they cover a fair distance....

You would have felt guilty if the dog had been hit, and it may be a genuine stray which someone will be very grateful to you for

Just dont give it a kiss

(not that that is what zoe did)!!

The best thing you could do for the dog is to keep it until monday morning and hand it over to your local vets, they will scan it, then either contact owner or contact the dog warden, where it will be collected from the vets and taken to local kennels/pound...which is not so good for the dog but maybe better than being squashed by a car.

I would contact the police and your local vets today anyway and give a description of the dog incase someone phones in enquiring about loosing it.

thanks for all your replies - I'm in scotland and she's a big black and tan dog. Could be greyhound cross or something like that, she's lovely, well trained and very friendly. Anyone want her ?? I would keep her myself but I've already got 2 dogs ........

Couldn't be this dog could it?

Definately not a doberman as one of those is missing in scotland? Not sure of areas there but they can travel miles in just a few days and these have been missing for ages. And she could have been picked up by someone and escaped again so her condition might not be an indicator of how long she's been straying.

You did the right thing in picking her up.....because whether she was a stray or not the thought of her being possibly run over......

Have you tried calling the Battersea Dogs home line - you can call them and give them her description.... thats what I did in the past.... turned out the dog I had found (just like yours) was in fact not reported as missing but another dog similar was and funnily enough this dog had only just gone missing from the same home... which belonged to travellers!!

I took her to the vet as she had quite a nasty wound on her side... so when the owner rang me to get her back I told him about the wound and he said he would get it looked at..... yeah right! anyway Battersea said they would report it and someone would check on the dog.... dont know if they did or not as never heard but at least when they collected her they said thank you....

Still got her ! and getting very attached, this is the nicest dog I've ever met !! Could have some doberman in her as she's a big dog but more likely a greyhound crossed with something. Still don't know what I'm going to do - I can't have 3 dogs !!

Ahhh three dogs is hardly any different to 2 dogs, especially if she is a greyhound X

Sorry, I am only joking really, I would have her if I were nearer to you but I reckon the Council will be your best option tomorrow

She is probably a saluki x greyound, there was a one hanging around near me and my sisters OH thought it was a doberman as it was big and black and tan with a long face lol......I got a glimpse when it ran past my car...it was a rather tall stunning saluki x greyhound, but I could see how he might think it was a fluffy eared doberman

.....they really do make fab pets if thats what it is
smirk.gif
....so much so...that if it was a third..u really would not know it was there

Did you check out the link I posted to Doglost with the black and tan dog missing in scotland? You could also enter her on there yourself as found. You may find she is microchipped and the owner can be traced when you take her to the vet tomorrow. Let us know how it turns out

Personally I'd keep her but then I am mad

As mentioned before 3's not that much more than 2. 1 more infact

Some of us on here have loads more than that. I have 4, CALA has about 15 ........

no, she's not the black and tan dog lost in Scotland - she's similar but much bigger and more greyhound like. Tomorrow is a problem for vets etc as I'll be at work but I'll see what i can do........and no I really can't have 3 dogs , I've only got a small house and really I've already got 1 too many as I've a terrier than i was left by my ex when he abandoned us all !!
If it was up to me I'd find a home for her and keep the new dog so if anyone knows of someone looking for a year old scruffy terrier let me know !

Keep the dog! keep the dog! keep the dog!!!

3 isnt that different to 2 and you probably wont even notice he is there!!! as he is so good....

Go on !! you know you want to !!!!!........

Keep him....

Much as it is tempting to keep a dog you have found, there is a legal obligation to report it to the local council. Many councils have an out of hours emergency number. Look up your council on the web, the details will be there.

I had a dog collected from me late-ish one evening by the kennels the council uses. Also, there may be an owner out there frantically searching for this lost dog

.

Please check the nearest village to where you found the dog for posters. Also phone the closest Dog rescue centres.

We lost a terrier and went mad trying to find him, we never did and wonder whether he was the result of someone "rescuing him"

Please remember the dog had a family and they might be going spare right now!
