Found a dog

OP, I'm surprised your vet didn't hang on to the dog themselves to wait for the dog warden. At our practice, anyone bringing in a stray dog has to leave it with us, they can't take it away again with them. We scan for a chip and contact owner if possible, or if no chip/contact possible we call the dog warden. We won't release a stray to an "owner" without clear evidence of ownership, eg photos, or when it's really obvious from dog/owner behaviour that they are kosher. We never post clear pics of dogs on our FB page, just in case they might be attempted to be claimed by someone who wasn't the genuine owner.
 
My vets are quite a small practice and I managed to take her down just as they were closing. I was a bit surprised as when I’ve taken lost dogs to different vets before they’ve hung onto them but at least the dog warden helped.

She’s still not been claimed but when my mum has tried to get in contact to ask about rehoming they will only say dogs are rehomed via charities, so it’s quite unlikely my parents will be able to take her on which would be a shame
 
I got a load of grief once in a drunken outburst from a former neighbour, who mistakenly thought I had picked up her two runaway terriers and taken them to the dog warden :oops:. Actually, it was my then 14 yo son that she ranted away at - he was completely confused.

She was completely irate that she was going to have to pay 2 lots of fees to release her dogs. I knew absolutely nothing about the missing terriers, and still have no idea why she had a pop at me.

It turned out that the good samaritan who had found the two terriers caught on a roadside hedge by their joint harness, and had taken them to the vets for scanning, had left his name.

It was Sir Ranulph Fiennes :D.

I never got an apology, either.

I dont think vets can insist the dog stays with them they have no power to do that

Ah, no, he was the good samaritan who picked the dogs up! Apparently, because of the way the dogs' harness had caught on the hedge, it looked like they had been tied up and abandoned.

Any normal person would be beside themselves with gratitude if a stranger had found their stray dogs and had handed them in.

I'm not sure if Sir RF ever got thanked, either.

On the Dog's Trust site it says (about dogs that you've found):

What if I would like to adopt the dog?
  1. Even if you are keen to adopt the dog, you will have to contact the Dog Warden and wait the 7 days period (5 days in Northern Ireland).
  2. The dog warden can then pass on your details to the kennels and if they feel you are suitable you will be expected to go through their normal adoption criteria for transfer of ownership (if the owner is not found).
  3. If you keep the dog in your home, you must inform the dog warden. You are then obliged by law to keep the dog for a period of 28 days. After this period you can keep the dog until such time that a person with proof of ownership claims him – in other words legal ownership is not transferred to you and the original owner may demand the dog back at any time, no matter how long you have kept him or how much money you have spent (including any vet's fees).

I experienced the same. Found a beautiful poodle mix that would have been great for my dad. Went to a rescue centre and I spent days trying to find out what happened to him. Firstly they said it had bitten someone and couldn’t be rehomed. Then I phoned and spoke to another person saying that there were other people ahead of me in the queue interested.
