OP, I'm surprised your vet didn't hang on to the dog themselves to wait for the dog warden. At our practice, anyone bringing in a stray dog has to leave it with us, they can't take it away again with them. We scan for a chip and contact owner if possible, or if no chip/contact possible we call the dog warden. We won't release a stray to an "owner" without clear evidence of ownership, eg photos, or when it's really obvious from dog/owner behaviour that they are kosher. We never post clear pics of dogs on our FB page, just in case they might be attempted to be claimed by someone who wasn't the genuine owner.
