Found a horse this morning

Well done you!

However, you do need to get some bute for him to help reduce pain and inflamation and also sedalin which helps open the veins and improves the circulation to the foot. Have a chat with your vet, but It might be wiser to keep him in on a really deep shavings bed until he is more comfortable moving around. The deep bed will help support his poor feet. My vet described to me that if you put on a trainer that is two sizes too small and filled with broken glass, you will get an idea of how a lami. attack feels to a horse.

That is shocking and so sad, that poor pony :( That owner sounds like a hideous and callous person, I hope the pony recovers well, sad that some people think so little of their horses :(

ETS: And well done to you to stepping in and helping that poor pony

Now, when this happened to me. I called the police. We had three travellers horses in my yard. All in a pretty dreadful state of neglect. We were told not to react to their welfare as it simply was not our problem and that if we didn't hand them back we were committing a crime. I.e theft.

The OP knows who owns the pony and the owner knows where the pony is and with the best of intentions cannot in law hold on to said animal. The travellers came with a trailer and sticks and whipped the animals into the cattle truck under the supervision of the police.

Be careful OP is all I am saying.

I think you are fantastic. If you pm me an address I'm sure I have some bute and ACP left over from my lami pony, now sadly gone. I will post it to you.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone i had some bute so have gave two one morning and one night and i have my secret stash of Acp so will give them to him as well. How many Acp for 13.2 but huge im going to weight tape him tomorrow as they need to know roughly how much he weighs

Well done you! Make sure you let us all know what happens to him...maybe the owners have given him up to the charity hence why they are trying to find him a place somewhere?

Well done for helping this pony.
Its good that he is getting the help he needs.

As someone had said it sounds like they have given him up to the welfare people.

Sad thing is they will probably just go out and buy the "jumping pony" now they have "freed" themselves of current pony.

You might end up in trouble if you start medicating someone elses pony without their and their vets consent. I would wait till you have veterinary and the owners permission to do so. Good luck anyway.

I would have given the bute too - and written a bill up for the owner if they come near! Anyway, if the horse charity is now involved its a bit more than someone withholding a pony - its been siezed, so to speak, and hopefully the owners will have been notified - seeing as OP knows where they live..

I think you're wonderful OP.

I'd get some video and photo evidence of him in pain before you medicate him, just to keep yourself right and as evidence incase there is a case against the owners.
Well done you for making a difference for this little chap!
Hope it all goes smoothly, sounds like you're doing all the right things.

Well done for taking him in and sticking to your guns. Be careful with ACP though, at one point they reduced the amount of the drug in the tablets from 25mg to 10mg, so obviously you'd need to know which you have before you start using them. As a rough guide my large (16hh) youngster used to have 8 25mg tabs before clipping to take the edge off so that we both survived the experience! I'm not sure what the dosage would be in this case though as you don't actually need the sedative effect, sorry.

I am sorry to be the boring one here, but want to make three points;
1. Assaulting someone is never a good thing to do
2. Only a vet can diagnose an animal with a condition, and prescribe POM
3. The animal welfare charity (you don't say which one) are not authorised to take the pony from the owner - legally you need the police.
Good luck with the situation.
S :D

Which animal welfare organisation is refusing to let the owners have the horse back OP? And they're leaving it with you meanwhile?

Have they the right to do that?

Havng watched this thread throughout the day I am amazed at the offences stacking up here  Theft of a horse, treating a horse when not a vet, threats of violence, quite possibly towards a minor. I still find the entire story somewhat odd.

is the pony kept on its own? I am somewhat surprised to hear that a laminitic pony voluntarily walked a mile, I can only think of a situation where it is kept alone and that there were no other equines for it to pass on its journey. How odd

Very unusual, for a pony which is so lame

Sorry iv just had the animal welfare people out they agree with me the horse is in pain and are going round the persons house to have a chat with her. In the meantime they have asked if i could keep the horse until they find space so i dont think she will be allowed to have him back not sure yet so im getting a stable ready for him is this right so far iv soaked hay three times bought woodchips loads no hard food and done a track for him in my winter field that has no grass is this ok so far Iv never had a pony with lamanites before so this is new to me.

Gosh you've been busy!

This. Why didn't the 'welfare agency' call a vet out?

The voice of reason  :)

Didn't take long for things to take a turn, did it?

Pats on the back followed by small doubts, then statements questioning the believability?

Good on the OP I say.

At some stage in the future, people won't share news on here, lest they get called liars and god knows what else.

Why people can't take things on face value until otherwise proved is beyond me. Don't we WANT to here good news stories these days? Does everything need to be substantiated?

Sure, people have been burned in the past, me too....but it hasn't turned me into a pessimist....

I agree with some of the others, you need to be careful or it could be you in trouble not the owner.

I too have a few problems with your OP. How do you know its lami, it is quite possible, but not certain, especially if he has travelled that distance. My first thought would have been has he injured himself escaping or on the journey. Just being fat does not been it has to be lami.

If its not lami then giving Bute could do more harm than good by masking the pain, the pony can then do more damage. I dont think you should give it any more medication.

I would have rung the police not a rescue organisation which sounds as though it doesn't know what its doing.

The owner can't be all that bothered. I would have thought they would be either taking the pony back as you cant actually stop them. Or come back with the police as its theft. Makes me think they know they are doing something wrong.
Keep us updated.

Well done for keeping the pony and contacting the welfare peeps, but please don't medicate someone elses horse without the welfare/vets written permission, what if the pony is highly allergic or you give a drug that will make other conditions worse, and definately don't administer sedatives!!

Don't open yourself up to more trouble, just hold on and get appropriate authorisation, always amazes me how safe people think Bute is?????? Some small breeds can go into Liver failure.

Please dont jump on me im only doing what was asked. I dont know the chat that went on between Horse welfare and the family the vet is out today. They might get him back i really dont know. The horse can walk all be it slowly so not dead lame. Maybe they gave him up again i dont know I would love to put pictures on here 1 I dont have a clue how to and 2 My camera is second hand and came with no software and i think i need that? And i never touch anyone so no assault took place Im ringing today to find out more imformation but if anyone wants to give me their mobile number i can send a picture from mobile to mobile The distance the pony walked i can do it in about 25 mins on foot. I did give him bute of my own back as worried about his pedal bones and wanted to stop him being sore wrong maybe but i dont care he was sore I think when vet comes tomorrow the pictures will be taken and how sore he is even on bute. This is the first horse thats ever turned up on my doorstep in eight years and hopefully my last. Its hard work soaking all this hay and double haynets Its now 2.15 in the morning and im tired been up all night checking him and making sure no one takes him. would i be doing this if he really wasnt here.

Although I left England many years ago I am sad to think that nowadays we cannot rescue an animal that obviously needs help. And we doubt everyones word. Is this what we have come to? Refuse to help a "dumb" animal in case we are accused of something? Cast doubt on everyones word 'cos they may be not telling the truth? How very sad...... It's not only the condition of the horse/pony that the op was concerned about - it was the treatment dealt out by the owner when she was attempting to return the pony......In the Kiwi vernacular I say "good on you"!!! Actually I think that is Ozzie speak!!!

Good luck with the whole thing OP...

However if you do think it's laminitis then you really need the vet out to the little chap, put him on deep shavings, your doing the right thing about the hay (soaking and double netting) no feed and no walking.
Just a thought though, if he's walked a long way he might just be foot sore or could be another reason for his lameness?

I hope the outcome for you and the pony are a good one. Keep us updated :)

Good for you traceyanne . If only more people would be like you and help animals in need and make a stand. The easy option is to turn your back and say it is not my reponsibility .It is easy to think ' Oh some one else will report it.'

I have worked with horses in the animal welfare sector so have some experience of peoples ignorance and cruelty. I hope the pony gets the care he needs, and does n't go back to his owners. You have been brave and done the right thing. The treatment you are giving the pony seems right it would be interesting to see what the vet says.

Good for you TraceyAnn. In your situation I would do the same and consequences be dammed. Sometimes you just have to do the right thing - I find it easier to live with a clear conscience. If I was nearer to you I would come and help soak haynets!

I wouldn't bute until the vet has been though, just so they can see exactly what is going on.

Lastly, might be worth videoing the horse walking for the vet tomorrow ...... it will cover your own back in case of any comeback.
