I went to look at a 'private' yard today for my two neds...wanting to leave current yard because of the bitching and, well, certain difficult people who moan about everyones horses but their own....

So current yard they are on DIY livery, I have a stable each in a barn, i have an 8/9 acre field for my two plus one other (although way too much grass for my mare, she's in a pen on restricted grazing and YO is always commenting on the lack of grass in there and that he hopes it will grow back...), we have an outdoor school with a floodlight, ok hacking and near enough to hack to OEC (2 miles), also xc course next door for hiring. I pay £22 a week each...

Place I looked at today is aprox 6/7 acre field, with 2 wooden stables....stables need repairing before being used (roof blown off!), I think there is running water (i forgot to ask....but there is a trough which I'm assuming is hooked up to a supply). So it would just be me there and they have said to do pretty much what I like with, can split with elec fencing, have a schooling area, put jumps up etc. I said I would want to get the stables sorted asap ready for winter, and that I'd be happy to do the work/buy materials. No electricity though, but has said her dad is an electrician, but don't know how straight forward it would be to hook up to mains electric (their house is the other side of lane from stables)? They want £10 per horse per week.......

Soooooo in a bit of a dilemma really....i would love to have them on their own, this place is 4.5 miles each way, whereas current yard is 9 miles each way...so not only a huge saving on livery but also on petrol....plus its on the way home for OH whereas current yard is 9 miles past our house....so he can always drop in if I am ever stuck at work late.

What would you do???? I am thinking go for it....but at the same time don't want to be stuck in the middle of winter with no lights......also wouldn't be able to ride during the week in winter as no lights.....hmmm decisions decisions.....

I looked at the cost of a generator...they are so expensive and knowing my luck it would get stolen!!!

Can you run plugs off of them....i.e. a kettle?

yes you can, and they arent all expensive
will ask OH where he got his, its a japenese (?) copy of a top brand abn is brill and was cheap

I'd move!! You have got enough time to get things sorted before winter. Yes if you get the right generator you can have plugs. Check the water though - you really do need to make sure it is mains and the trough is connected - no mains water is way more hassle than no electric.

House is almost next door to field, there is a lane seperating the house from the field, stables then in that top right hand corner of field.

I was def going to ask about the water, the last thing I want to be doing is hauling water in containers everywhere...

Oh Alsxx you have to move, you were so fed up with all of the bitching at your yard, you were really down about it ... go for it move and have a lovely time with your horses again!

I'd do it, we left a bitchy livery yard for one that sounds similar, although have now found one up road with school so moved again, but for nearly a yr now i've not once stressed over goin to yard cuz of the ppl!! def check the water.
We bought a gene from aldi (the cheapo supermarket) for £150, its ace, it runs all our floodlights and kettle etc, costs less than £10 a month in petrol in winter, and £5 is currently lasting 8 wks. The freedom u get on ur own yard cant be beaten imo!

I know, and I am about 75% sure that moving is the best thing....I just always think about the what ifs....I'm terrible!!

OH thinks it would be a good move...and he's a teacher so has the summer off and said he'd be happy to do some work on the roof to help me out.

I think I will phone her tomo and double check the water, and ask if she can ask her dad how possible it would be to string electric up. If not I can always get a generator.

alsx its noisy enough, but even my silly arab can put up with it, so it cant be that bad!! it's just worked out so cheap and surprisingly reliable for us, its been worth its weight in gold! (well maybe not quite that much, it is quite heavy too!!)
If its a choice between that and solar, i'd pick the gene as i can ride by our big halogen floodlights, coudln't get enough power from the solar panels for that

Yes definately, I would love to go for a ride on the beach!!

Ah they would get used to the noise, it would be more the people in the house I'd be worried about disturbing...that sounds good though, I could then ride by generator light in the winter!! Its just nice to be able to have hot water if I ever need it, and of course to plug in my clippers!!

It will be a lot of work sorting the roof out but would def be worth it in the end I think.

We have neighbours to our yard, over the lane, who live in a canal boat, they've never complained about the noise, and i'm sure they dont have double glazing lol!! I agree it will be worth it, you wont be alone with the roofing, we've got our shelter to re-roof pre winter. All adds to the satisfaction when u leave at night and they are all happy!
