Found dog photo update...

Hector update...

We created a monster! Hector is gaining in confidence, last update I said he had learned "play", then yesterday he learned "grooming". That was good to see as he has not attended to his cleanliness up to now.

This morning Hector thought he might see if he could dominate OH. A good effort for a little chap, and laughable. Laughable right until we put him down thinking he was top dog, whereupon he decided that as he had dominated OH then he was also boss of Talos (rather large GSD), and would take his chew and keep it, thank you very much.

It is a good job that Talos is such a good natured dog, as he let him have it and looked at us in bemusement that such a little scrap would verbally chase him off. No more dominance games for Hector, he is now on the floor!

What was nice was to see them both playing nicely on the yard while I did Jay. A bit of rough and tumble, but not very rough, they are just working it out between themselves.

It is hard to resist having him on your knee as he is such a little scrap and very vulnerable. Today he had times when he felt happy, like in the photo or playing with Talos, but then if he is left alone, or even in the same room, but not being cuddled, then he is unhappy. Just dropping something on the floor causes upset if it is noisy. He just freezes in place like a statue, and when we have tried to leave him to come round he will be stand frozen, so there is nothing we can do but pick him up and have another cuddle.

In fact I just got off the internet from spending another £50 on a warmer jacket for him, a water bowl that he will hopefully not spill 5 X a day, a dog harness for the car and a booster seat (yep, you heard right) so he can sit in the front seat!!!!

His new throne...

Good news is that it has only been 11 days and he is getting better and better, and he is putting weight on. I would say he is happy 75% of the time now. Still a smelly little runt though!

Oh wow, fabulous updates, and photos too! Thank you.
That photo of your OH with him is lovely of both of them.

It sounds as though he is making great progress - must be awful to see him so scared. We had a rescue dog once who, if you moved your hand to stroke her, would drop to the floor and cower and shake with fear. She thought you were going to hit her. That took a year or more to disappear completely. Lovely to hear he and Talos are playing - sounds as though he is going to be top dog over Talos, at least, though. <g>

Loving the updates. Our little jrt has a booster seat and harness on the middle seat in our little lorry! OH felt sorry for him because he couldnt see out. Actually he does really seem to like it and sits still and watches where he is going, when we park up he will happily sit and wait until we are tacked up and ready to set off so it was a good buy. He also has a Mark Todd jacket in the lorry, again OH wanted him to be warm and comfy.

Dogs. When they get to the stage where the best you can offer them is beds and painkillers... Let there be beds!

Many beds.

Varied beds.

Beds of many colours.

And jackets, even in summer

Almost 7 years since little Hector arrived. He was supposed to already be a mature adult, vets initial guess was 7, so that would make him 14!!!

He cost us £1,400 initially in vets bills.

He rules the house.

He took over the sofa and our bed the first dog EVER to achieve that!

We love Hekkie, even though, sadly he is slowing down.

A little update for those who remember him arriving.

It does feel a bot like a home for waifs and strays here. What with Hector, inheriting mum's dog Cracker and Rigsby too. All super little characters.

I remember you finding Hector like it was Yesterday Red:)
Such a lucky little chap and wonderful that you've had so many years together. i'm sure you'll have many more. xxx

He was already old and in such bad health, we thought we may get 1 or maybe 2 years with him. He is definitely slower, the vet says he should not be on daily full strength pain killer and we can start to add paracetamol (I think it was, but she will re-examine and all us the dose) when that also becomes necessary.

I won't be shy to PTS if he lies quality of life, I did wonder a couple of months ago if that time was coming closer, but the warmer weather seems to have revitalised him a bit. He also has a dog physio coming to him next week!

The extra beds are because he can't always jump on the sofa any more, but being picked up is also not always comfortable. He used to love being cuddled, it is such a shame. We carry him to bed at night, and if he asks to come up, and have developed a way to do this that is 90% agreeable to him.

What an amazing bed <g>

I've just seen it was AdorableAlice's Ted's 10th birthday, and now it seems it is 7 years since Hector arrived! I also remember it as though, errr, it was only a couple of years ago - help.

He's a good age - especially considering a tough start before you got him, and the health issues. Lucky him, and lucky you.

We've just adopted a dog who turned out to be 9, and the only sad thing is that she'll be with us for fewer years (that's assuming all goes well!) than we'd like.
7 years of Hekkie sounds as though it's been fun - glad you can look after him and make him as comfortable as possible :)

I didn't see the original thread either but am so glad he found you and is having his old age with someone who will definitely put his needs first and know when the time is right.

We adopted a ten-year-old broken dog a few years ago (broken cruciate ligament which cost a bit to put right) and only had him three years before he died on our hall floor one evening, but what a joy-filled three years they were and I will never, ever regret giving him that old age despite the pain when he went.
