Hi,

I have fond a little terrier today, it is small, black, male and scruffy. Found in Sykehouse, Doncaster dodging cars.

I do not want another dog, but nor do I want this little one PTS. Is there a charity better than most for not PTS a healthy dog? I don't think it is house trained, and the local council kennels only gives them 24hrs before PTS I think.

All dogs need reg with a dog warden, the council kennels are full to bursting but they have to serve 7 days then sadly a lot are getting pts. Reg on dog lost website, FB and phone local vets. Have you been to a vets to see if the dog is chipped? You do have to report finding the dog by law.

Hi, thank you, I have already put on facebook lost and found pets Doncaster, spread amongst all friends locally and asked to share further, have checked council list on the internet for lost dogs of same description, obviously it being a Sunday other options have been limited.

He has been washed (matted stinky coat) and is now in a cage in the house to keep warm as he does not seem to be house trained. He is also painfully thin, so is having a few mouthfuls of soft food every couple of hours. He has brightened up no end, and when taken for a walk on the lead is peeing on every surface, it seems he would like to mark this as his home!

Vets tomorrow to see if he is chipped.

He looks very cute.
I believe the Dog's Trust say they will not put a dog down (unless that's changed) - is there one near you?

Thank you Teacups, but I fear it is too late. The little chap had a quiet night, and finally had a poo this morning. I was concerned as he had not despite being with us nearly 24 hours, but I guess his system was empty and it took a while to filter through.

As he is now processing food he will have 3 or 4 small meals tofday and hopefully just two tomorrow, like our other dog. Our GSD Talos is less than impressed, and we are allowing them to get to know each other on the lead and through the cage. The little chap is totally un fearful.

So, too late, we have reported him, facebooked him, will take him to the vets, but we will not send him away. I have reasoned that he is the perfect size for our little 3.9 tonne horsebox, and he would love to be walking the course at events. Our GSD is just too big, he only comes to walk the course if wetake the car the day before.

So, we have gained a little dog I think. He looks older, and is not house trained in so much as he cocks his leg everywhere, but he was clean in his cage overnight, and I guess with time he will learn not to cock his leg inside.

Vets today to scan for a chip, worm and have his ears examined.

Oh, and he is starting to get his bark, yesterday he was very horse!

Ooh, great news! I am so pleased to hear that. Lucky dog. Not surprised you couldn't resist: he looks very attractive.

Your first sentence was awful, though: I thought you meant he had died overnight, or been put down at the vet's early this morning.

What do you think he is? He looks a bit Patterdale-ish. Will be interesting to hear what the vet says.

Assuming no owners turn up, hope he housetrains very quickly too. Has he been done?

Hi, sorry for making you think he had died! No, it is just too late for us to give him away, as we have become attached!

I suspect he is well aged. He was clean in his cage overnight, so I think if he were done he may stop marking all over. HOWEVER because he is a found dog we can't do him for 28 days at least, and even then it will depend on how old the vet thinks he is.

Vets booked for 10.20. He is being scanned, having suspect ear mites checked, and wormed. He has also been sneezing a bit so we will have him looked at for that. I think vaccinations *may* wait until after the 28 day time period though.

Bloomin expensive scrap of grey hair and pee!!!

BTW, horse was amazed this morning. Jay is used to a GSD not a scrap of fluff.

Vet says no chip. So, he cost us £55 for wormer and ear drops. Vet also says aged, and skinny, and sore paws!

Will give it the 28 days and then he will be vaccinated and chipped too. Also, if he has not stopped peeing everywhere he may be castrated :-(

Generally healthy, then - hooray. Can just imagine the horse's face! I bet scrappy dog was not intimidated in the least. Had he seen horses before, do you think?

Hope housetraining works. Marking everything outside would be fine, presumably!

Red, i am so pleased you kept ' scrappy ' dog, you are a lovely lady, sounds to me like he's been roughing it for a while and has clocked up some miles if he has sore paws, he will be a happy dog now to be part of a pack again.
weirdly enough OH came home last week with 2 starving hunting hounds and they were in my basement for a week, got really attached to them , i love the hounds over here ,we have one we rescued called a Grande Bleu de Gascogne, she is amazing, we found the owner of the hounds , long story but gave them back only because we had to by law not because he was a nice person.
can't win them all and i feel a bit gutted but that's life sometimes which is why you keeping scrappy is wonderful.xx

Well done for doing everything u can for this little chap, he seems to have landed on his paws.
After his 28 days you can get him chipped for free via dog trust go onto there website. He is prob a little farm dog coming from that area.

Im so pleased you have decided to keep him, he does look like a lovely little dog. I have one that size and he is perfect for our 3.5t lorry, our 2 springers are too big. He has his own booster seat and harness and sits in the cab, then comes out on hacks with us. He loves it. Hope he settles down and rewards you for your compassion x

Thank you all for your kind words, I am exhausted!

Hector is charming, but seems to be looking for a way out, under the gate etc, but we tried him with a drive in the car around the locality and he did not seem to recognise anywhere. Shady, if his owner did turn up I would feel OK to hand him over, as he is so friendly and confident that I cannot believe he has ever known cruelty. He travelled well, was interested in where he was going but never seemed to recognise his surroundings.

I know it sounds silly, but my GSD Talos is happy to go out in the car, but is always excited to be getting near to home. Made sure to drive him up the road where I found him too, no reaction.

Talos is horrified at having a new brother, and we are supervising closely. Hector ignored the horse completely, and is humouring Talos like a pro. He ate his wormer no probs, and grunted deeply when he had his first squirt with ear drops. If anyone is interested Tesco dog insurance is Wayyyyyy cheaper than NFU!!!

Read this thread yesterday, have spent 24 persuading my husband that we really could have a little terrier in our gang, came back to offer him a home ! Drat !

Seriously delighted it has turned out ok for the little chap - well done you. Will defo kept an eye open for you & Hector walking the courses at events.

Oooh, I wish we had spoken earlier. That has just sparked a big conversation with me and my OH. We do not really want a little dog, but when we reported it to the Dog warden the choice was to keep him or he went to kennels. I know at our local kennels they generally end up PTS, and also once there he would 99.9% have kennel cough. So, I elected to keep him.

This is what then surprised me, I had to be recorded and agree verbally, on record, to a load of conditions. One of the conditions was that I HAVE to keep him for 28 days, and I also had to agree to a dog warden paying a surprise visit at some time in that 28 days to examine both the dog and us as prospective "parents".

If it were not for that he would be yours!

You could try posting on Dog Lost http://www.doglost.co.uk/ in case he has been taken from another part of the country and then dumped. I did have a quick look but wasn't sure what breed he would be listed under

I am not sure what he would be, and neither was the vet. His most distinguishing mark was the outsize red webbing collar (no tags obviously). Looking at his weight I do wonder if it did fit when he was last at home. He looks a Terrier type, was possibly once black (black points) but is salt and pepper now. He has a white chest and tips to his front paws.

If hes too old for surgical castration you can get them chemically castrated. Its an implant that goes in at the back of the neck. Takes a few weeks to kick in and is only supposed to last 6 months, its still effective in mine a year later though.

Just seen this thread, what a gawguss little chap, looks like he's landed on his paws. Love his face in the ear drop picture, he looks very smug as if to say result, look where I've ended up :smile3:
