As my TB was eating her dinner tonight I was faffing about checking her for any cuts etc on her legs, and then ran my hand under her belly where her belly button is (towards her teats) as she sometimes gets little flies burying themselves in her skin there and they obviously make it sore.. But instead of little flies I found little yellowy (pus type stuff) bumps. I'm sure they are from fly bites and put some antibacterial yellow gel on them, will check again tomorrow morning to see if its helped. Just wondered if any one else's horse has had them? Or to confirm it's from fly bites? They were much worse on the one side than the other. When I first came across it I ran my fingers over it and she flinched so they must be sore :(

Pic of worse side.. (Before I put gel on it)

They do look sore, but think you are right fly bites

Ok, thanks! Do you think I've done the right thing for now? I don't want to pick at them as she's been very good so far with me putting the gel on. Also any recommendations of something I could put on her in that area to help stop the flies biting her? I don't want to spend lots of money on something that's not going to work or something that will irritate her as it's quite a sensitive area..

My tb mare has mild sweetitch and gets sore patches in the same area from the midges. I apply Nettex Itchfree cream which is very soothing, healing and fly repellent. It works very quickly and I find that I need apply it only every 2-3 days after her skin has healed as it is contains a long lasting repellent.

Thanks a lot! I will look in to both of your suggestions. She doesn't suffer from sweet itch at all in her mane/tail etc although I guess if it's a reaction due to the flies technically it is? I just hope it clears up soon!

My filly gets them here too. I just sponge the area once a week and try to remember to cover her in fly spray. They don't seem to bother her too much.

my mare is a bit yuk under there with fly bites too. Yesterday i made up some diluted hibi scrub and sponge her all down and quite a look of scabby bits came off, then put some anti septic cream on the bites. She is getting fly sprayed and gelled under there but - ARGH Flies  Im just going to keep it clean washing the area and applying repllent is about all i can do x

Its sweat rash, you need to get some fuciderm cream from the vets, then always make sure you thoroughly wash all the sweat off.

They could be fly bites but I'd be more inclined to consider sweat rash as well.

Wash with NIzerol diluted in hand hot water - leave for 10 mins and rinse off.

Make sure when she is hot that you wash the sweat away from between her legs.

Ok thanks everyone! I do wash her down when she gets hot, although much to her disgust :D! That's why I assumed it was flies as normally when I run my hand under there will be the occasional dried pus bump and a fair few dead flies which i've squashed in the process which had buried themselves in her skin. She's never had it this bad before! Although as it has been hot I could understand it could be a sweat rash too as its in a sweaty kind of place. Thanks for all of your advise, I will have another look tomorrow and see how they are then go from there (having to pick one of the things you've all suggested lol)!

She's in a bit of bother if that's where the girth goes!:D

ETA - I'm pretty sure it's fly bites. A layer of sudocreme will protect from biting flies when they're at their worst.

I used Sudocrem there when my mare suffered. Rub it in your hands, first, so she doesn't go into orbit! She doesn't suffer these days, not since I started using Neem Oil.
