Founderguard supplement

My vet is currently arranging a prescription of Founderguard (think it is Australian?) for my mare who is currently suffering from colic induced laminitis.

Has anyone used it? Any thoughts?
 
Yes I used to use it on a little Welsh mare & it was fantastic but I used it to prevent laminitis due to rich grazing so have no experience of how effective it would be in your situation. I only stopped using it as it hadn't been tested as safe for brood mares and I started breeding from her.
 
I am currently speaking to my vet regarding possibly using this on a mare.

Would be very interested to hear how much it costs etc...
 
spoke to my vet again, who said it is hard to get hold of. Vets have to apply for a special licence to prescribe it.

The cost of this, plus the actual medication is around £150 a tub (which will last about 4-6 weeks).

He advised me not to go for it as it's not licenced here and works on an antibiotic basis, therefore isnt really suitable for long term use.
 
Someone I know used it and did find it effective but, over time, it seened to become less effective. In the end it got that her hrse had to have it every day without fail, but vets are limted to how much they can supply to one horse, as it is only supposed to be used short term. I think she paid around £150 per tub/bag
 
They've already applied for the license and it has been granted so should be with me shortly.

I think as my horses laminitis was caused by colic/stress it has a good chance of helping her recovery. The plan is to only use it short term, basically while we introduce her back into a normal routine and grass etc.

My insurance is covering it all so I'm happy to give it a try - haven't got anything to lose really.
