I'll have had Monty four weeks on Tuesday. For comparison, I had some pictures of the first time I rode him in his new home (in the bitless bridle) but because I'm a photo-nerd I have about a million SD cards and I can't find the one they're on

However, these were taken yesterday. My hands are still too low, my lower leg position is terrible and I spend too much time admiring his lovely mane... but in three weeks I feel that we've come MILES. When he first arrived he wouldn't stop doing a girraffe impression, hadn't a notion of 'outline' and he didn't halt. Didn't take off, but didn't halt :D

We still both have a HUGE way to go (I have to remember how to ride and he has learn to bend, to name but two obstacles!) but I love him to bits, he's amazing to ride. Despite not having done any real school-work for two years, he's so light in my hands and moves straight off my leg. He's also the most bombproof horse I've ever met on hacks, touch wood. :) :)

(And his 'shocking pastern axis' hasn't crippled him yet, fingers crossed :D)

Thank you, I'm such a proud Monty-Mammy! He is VERY ginger... we'll look terrible in the summer when my hair lightens, we'll totally clash :D He does a great job of disguising his ginger-ness by coating himself in mud and sh * te every day.

I'd love to do some dressage with him eventually. And just pop over a few *small* fences at home, lots of happy hacking and enjoyment. A friend of a friend, who's apparently (clueless me!) a very good show producer has suggested I show him as a heavyweight hunter. Not sure about that but we'll see!

I did see the first post of when you got him and did raise my eyebrows at the scathing posts but as most people siad then he is lovely and it is nice to see you are so happy with him.

I am sure you will progress well togethor and dont criticise yourself so much you have gone and bought and chosen a new horse all is going well and you are having a good time togethor, i would say you are doing very well.

And he is a very hunky handsome chap.:)

I love ginger horses, my sister has had two pure orange mares. Only bad thing is when they get sun bleached over summer!!

I reckon all of that is well within your reach. He could definitely be a HW showing hunter if he turns out to have the jumping finesse. But....you'd have to de-hair him! A lot!! De-hairing and trimming for showing is soooo time consuming; even my section B I used to do M&M on was as hairless and trimmed as could be for a M&M!!!

Thanks Trinity :) I'm very critical of myself at the moment because I keep noticing bad habits that I didn't have years ago when I was taking the dressage thing reasonably seriously. However, even I can see that we're making real progress and it was my proudest moment of recent times when two of the owners on the yard said (separately, yay!) that they could tell I used to ride dressage as they thought I had a brilliant seat... cue me grinning for a week. Non-horsey housemate thought that was code for 'big arse'. Don't care :D

nikkimariet - yeah that's what friend of friend said... but I love his long mane! Here's a picture of him (from original ad) from either last summer or summer before. He is significantly less hairy during the summer at least... can't wait! FOF seriously reckons he'd be great for showing, but I'm not that interested myself. May see if she, or the friend, would show him if I do all the prep/grooming!

Well i dont do much of the dressage thing although having to more and more but if your friend is sure the having a big arse helps then i had better get at it.

Even at my most slim i have a beyonce or junk in the trunk.;)

Aww he's totally gorg..i love an orange horsey! I saw your previous post and thought some of the comments (ahem...pastern axis .....) were ridiculous. Take no heed.
Looks like your getting along just fine with him....you'll be out winning in no time! xx

agree with this - i too was shocked at rpevious rude horrible posts - yuor boy looks loveley and you are obviously well happy - enjoy your lad he will bring you much happiness :)

He looks a lovely, honest type of horse - and I suspect, quite a character.
He reminds me of the best horse I ever had . (I had him for 33 years) -
So here's wishing you many years of happiness together.
Tegs :)

Thanks everyone, delighted :)

That's great to hear ChwaraeTeg, thanks and I hope we'll be the same :) And yes, he is a total character... a complete softie underneath a grumpy exterior. Very clever and enjoys a good dose of vandalism/thuggery with buckets/wheelbarrows and the like!

To be honest I didn't really take much notice of the trolling on my first thread, I actually found it mildly amusing! He's not conformationally perfect (although I don't think too far off having very good confirmation), but I think if I'd found a confirmationally perfect horse for what I paid for him, it probably would have been a nightmare to ride. And to think he was the first horse I went to see - I lucked out :)

Yummy boy!

And I wouldn't worry about this pasterns, they don't look wrong to me...and besides, many conformationally perfect horses go terminally lame all the time, and many imperfect bog horses go on for years without a days lameness in their lives!

Imperfection rules, in my book! Lol

May you have many happy years together.
He looks lovely not easy to find a horse that suits you so well on the first attempt.
I see you are in Co Clare there is quite an active group of Trec Ireland down there it sounds like you might like Trec.
Heres a link
