...and a five year old girl has her ear bitten off by a donkey.
Horrible for the boy's parents to have witnessed it

The small mercy for the girl is that her hearing is 'unaffected'

yes, really awful, but do we REALLY need to trawl the world for bad stories? why cant H&H print more good news stories? Life can be miserable at times and with so much badness about we could do with some happy tales.

absolutely awful but you have to wonder how P**d off that second donkey must have been to do that? Are donkey's nasty generally by nature as ours never have been?

I have known some nice donkeys and some rather horrid ones. I used to have to school at the bottom of a field some years ago but it meant I had to walk through a field with 2 donks in. The jack was a nasty piece of s**t and used to chase you teeth bared. Not the horse, just you. You had to have a check list before you went in. Hat - check, Donkey proof clothing - check, big long smacky type whip - check.

In general, donkeys are very friendly and one of the most tolerant animals but, as with any animal, there will be some that are not. Donkeys are not the cuddly teddy bears that people seem to think they are, they are a close relative of the horse, and, as such, should be given as much respect.

I wish the article explained why it happened. It just says the girl was playing in a town and a donkey attacked her.... we dont get many donkeys wondering round durham attacking people!

All thoughts are with the little boys family x

Most donkeys are gentle, kind and very long suffering. Generally they think things through and have very good reasons for their actions. Remember, donkeys do not behave similarly to horses and may be aggressive when frightened instead of running away. They may also be protective of their own - think of the recent story of Dotty the donkey that attacked the dog that was savaging a sheep.

The child who died had a foot caught in a stirrup.

This happened to a childhood friend. She was left dangling from the saddle of a bolting pony. Her mother just managed to prevent the pony from galloping through a 'lych gate'.

I keep front stirrup guards in my tack room for young'uns and riders with 'trainers'
