Looking through the horse ad's at the moment and there are a lot of horses which are 4, the owners say don't let the age put you off, v quiet and wise beyond their years etc

As a novice rider i have been looking at horses 8 years and above in the main, saw a nice skewbald gelding though, which i posted about last night who was 5.

Is their such a thing as a horse wise beyond their years? just wondering whether i should go and try some of these younger horses, but am nervous because i have never had a horse younger than 8 and not experienced with youngsters.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I'd go and have a look at some, i have known some very quiet 4/5 yr olds, and never gussed they were that young. It won't hurt to have a look, watch them being ridden and asses for yourself if you think you could ride it.

Or if your not comfortable with that, loan one, mabe veiw to buy, untill you think you could ride a younger horse, then buy.

Or alternatively you can advertise yourself, and state what your looking for, that works well sometimes.
Good luck with your search :)

I bought one of those 4 year olds nearly 2 years ago, and I am a very nervous rider. You may think "recipe for disaster" , but I am very happy with my horse. He has a very calm and quiet temprement and is not spooky, however odviously some things were beyond his experience but , to date I have had no problems with him. The only drawback is that I would be able to make more progress as a rider if I had bought a more experienced horse, there are some things he cannot help me with but for hacking , even alone , he has proved very sensible.

This worker for me. I couldn't find anything which I thought was suitable so posted some wanted adverts...... Was amazing how many people got in touch.

I wonder if the young horses are for sale because that is what they are bred for, and if they are sane and sensible people are reluctant to part with them.So less older horses for sale. However you may need to budget for help from an instructor, and have realistic expectations of your horse and not spoil things by expecting too much of an inexperienced horse.

After my own much searching for been there got the tshirt type everyone else wanted with no luck cut a story short i ended up with a newly broken 3yo and worse still just had a few lessons after years and years = recipe for disaster was best thing ive done yes ive learnt so much weve been together a year and half nearly and hes brilliant !I did bag him on a two week trial lloan though and did every thing with him tbx type had my 7yo on him as well he hacks out alone on fields, roads the lot i never had any lessons on him until this year .I t can work but i spend every day with him handling /or riding him he does however have exceptional temperment and hes laid back and i got him off a dealer and didnt agree the price before trial :eek:so had a very stressful second week :rolleyes:got him at a very good price and would have paid double:Dbut didnt tell dealer that, so it can work i have fell off a lot but not his fault my balancing act

My 4yo used to nanny older horses as he was so good so don"t discount a young horse as there is very good ones out there. I have just bought a 3 yo who is really quiet.

Very sensible advice, i would just like a horse which was happy to hack alone and in company but more so alone.
There are a few advertised which i might consider ringing about - can't hurt to go and see them can it?

These are some i am considering what do you think? My Fav is Duncan but he's the youngest
