Hi,

I am thinking about changing my Disco TD5 for a Fourtrak.
I am assuming that being a smaller, lighter vehicle, a Fourtrak should be better on fuel than a TD5. I don't know the MPG of my vehicle, only that it will do about 110 miles on £20 of deisel, would I get more out of a Fourtrak? What is the max towing weight of a Fourtrak, I have been told it's 3.5t, but that seems a lot for a small 4x4.

I have had a Trooper before and loved it, and I assume a Fourtrak would be similar, basic but hard as nails (unlike the Disco, which is lovely, but thing keep breaking on it )

How much should I expect to have to pay for a ten year old Fourtrak (trying to avoid the higher road tax) and where would be the best plce to look for one?

Also, anyone know how much a top of the range, ten year old, tidy TD5 with 120k on the clock is worth?

Hi, I have a fourtrak and swear by it.
I would suggest you go on the Fourtrak, Daihatsu. Forum, there are a lot of helpful people on there and you should get the answers you need.

We used to have a fourtrak and loved it, infact we had 2. Only got a bigger 4x4 as the dog couldnt get in and out as they are only 2 doors. 110 miles for £20 is very good, I cant remember what we got but 26 to the gallon rings a bell, so I suppose similar??? They do have 3.5t towing capacity and are proper workhorses. Not sure what age you are looking at but pre 94 (ish) are on leaf springs and are very bouncy, after that they feel more like a normal car. They are basic but great cars for towing

That's 110 miles of very steady driving, I rarely go over 50mph and accelerate gently. If we are towing or have to go on the motorway, then it uses loads more.

I would hope to get a 2000 Fourtrak (W / X reg?)- as new as you can get without having to pay the higher road tax.

Have just reg on the Daihatsu forum - will have a look later!

I would stick to what you've got !!!! not that there is anything wrong with a fourtrack but I dont see what you are going to achieve??? mpg will be simalar or worse.. and if yours is basicly ok why change??? you will be lucky to find a tidy fourtrack they are ether knackerd or someone is hanging on to it because its tidy and carnt replace it....IMHO

I am looking to change because when newer Discos go wrong they are expensive to put right, partly because OH cannot always do a DIY job. Fourtraks are Japanese and are therefore less likely to go wrong, and if it was to go wrong, the fact that they are basic means OH will probably be able to repair it himself.

Also, I think it's quite likely that I will be able to buy a Fourtrak for less than my Disco is worth, leaving me some money left over to spend on a new horse! :D

I've got one for towing and I love it. But it's quite heavy on fuel, about 27 to the gallon I think, dropping to about 20 when towing. They stopped making them quite a long time ago, not sure exactly when but you probably wouldn't get one any younger anyway even if you wanted one! I also don't find mine very comfortable on a long journey.

yes that sounds sensible .....

Up until a year ago, I used to use my Fourtrak for getting to work, horses etc. It would on average do 200 miles on a tank at £50 in stop, start, stop start traffic all the way.

So seriously juicy.

I've bought a small car now and keep the 4WD just for towing.

Mine seems to be particularly heavy on the fuel though.

Yes, they have 3.5t towing power, think it's the same for Long or Short wheel base. Mine's LWB. Friend has the SWB and it literally has half a foot of boot space. Mine's got tons of room.

As to price.... no idea really. They seem to be as rare as hens teeth now.

I have one for towing - 3.5t is right. Mine has happily towed a very old heavy trailer with 2 horses in up a ridiculously steep hill!

Its quite good on fuel day to day - but drinks the stuff when I'm towing.

Its also ridiculously bouncy - if I go over speed bumps it feels like i'm sat on a pogo stick! But I love it! Its basic and feels like driving a bus but its fab.

I got mine for £900 from ebay last year!
