2 days ago I was just chucking a scoop of muck on heap when I notice a orange/red coloured something .... walked up to it and realised that it was a fox head - eyes had been eaten. Thinking it a bit odd I unearthed what should have been the rest of it but turned out to be a spine and one leg ! yuck yuck yuck

This was on the edge of my muck heap - wasnt there the day before - the fox head was clean and looked freshh (lovely clean fur although this doesnt make up for lack of eyes in the appearance stakes) so hadnt been buried in muck heap and anyway its my yard so no one else goes in there and the heap had been removed about a month ago so it was only the fresh stuff there it was on top of.

Had to pick up with pooper scopper and chuck in nettles etc behind muck heap - came down yesterday to find just a jaw (good teeth obviously flossed!) and a leg !! something had pulled it back on the muck heap.

All suggestions welcome as to how it got there ! I am otherwise blaming the big black cat that supposedly roams the area !!!!!!

How odd! If it had been any other species I would have expected a fox had taken it there.

Can only think it had perhaps been shot and the body eaten by foxes....or a big cat ;)

You should worry....we have got a real live fox sleeping every night in our hay barn, despite a snarly big dog:). We have always thought our yard was fox proof but when my cockerals started disappearing last week I knew foxy was about. I caught him on top of the barn yesterday morning (about 20' high) and he casually jumped onto our wooden yard gate and into the road....where's a road rage bod when you need one! Back to your predicament it could easily be a dog getting in??

thanks for suggestions - dont think a dog would get in - well maybe a papillon but nothng bigger - my dog cant get out and it def. wasnt him doing the fox moving as it was in bush when left and back on muck heap when got back - also my border collie wont hurt anything, likes to round up but wont bite/eat it !

It is weird - did wonder if one of the kennels down the road had lost a hound and it had found its way into my field to eat mr fox but no sign of gorgeous hound ! We do have rats which could have eaten it but although they are big coudlnt have dragged it - only other thought is that mink have been seen round by us but not for a while ! or badger !!!

Ahhhh i would of run a mile finding dead mice sends me running!!!! sorry no help with how it got there tho big cat is prob your answer we have had one spotted down here in south wales aswell

Gilbey - nice of you to supply your local Mr Fox with cockerels and a sleeping place haha... you need a new dog !

I did chuck some hay from last cut on muck heap but it was all in bits not full bales and if fox had been in there I hope I would have noticed !!

Someone else suggested large birds of prey but cant see them going in the nettles to drag it back out !

I doubt it would be a big cat- cats prefer fresh food they have caught themselves, the crows would have had the eyes. Could have been a red kite as they eat carrion... foxes don't tend to canabalise but a hungry badger would have the strength and nose power to find it and munch on it- unusual but not unheard of!

Only other thing I can think of is a combination of rats and something else, maybe a sick feral cat that can't hunt properly!

Combination of all sorts eating it, crows, feral cats, rats etc. Maybe a badger to drag it round? We also had an old injured dog fox hanging around for a bit (till it was shot) that was hungry enough to eat anything, if you have one starving enough & unable to hunt about it could explain it.

Just suprised the dog didnt pick up on fox scent and go a bit loopy - we did have fox living in field at back of mine and he occasionally ventured into my field although he was doing a rubbish job of keeping the rabbits under control - loads of the blimmin things eating my grass - no shortage of food for him !

Hopefully some nice animal will have carried off his last leg and the jaw that was on muck heap - small little pointy teeth - very clean !

meesha our barn is shut up at night to prevent the dog going in and doing what dogs do on the hay bales lol!!:) HOWEVER I have NEWS!! The dog caught the fox and dispatched it very quickly this evening in one of our paddocks :) she is our heroine tonight!!

Someone shot a fox and threw it in the hedge on the way up to one of our fields. It was there a week or so and getting a bit whiffy but something has dragged it down into the field and eaten it now. I was guessing a combination of crows/badgers too but had forgotten the rats!!

Gilbey - glad dog has redeemed himself !!!

Found Fox spine on arena today - nice of something to spread it around ! its like a crime scene !
