I see you as more of a 'Fozzy bear' lightening any tension with laughter... also the scarf!

Congrats on the very representative population... on a hunting forum :p possible bias? nah!

Actually, the poll is in response to a thread asking about opinions on HHO - I'm not here to perform research to provide data representative of the opinions of the entire population

Can't help but laugh that the 4's are in the minority (small minority but minority all the same) and a forum called Horse and Hound!

Only if you count "indifferent" as "against" - which I don't , otherwise I wouldn't have included it as an alternative :D

I was just counting the actual 4's. I was an "other" - not for, not against- just confused- but I would have expected much higher %age 4 hunting on the H&H forum. That's all I meant.

Is it under 50%? I can't see as am on my phone! I think it's because NL isn't very huntingy and HHO is such a large forum, encompassing a lot of horsey people who don't read h&h or have any hunting connections, despite the name of the forum. :)

Yeah, it 46.32% for hunting which I thought was low, I expected it to be much higher on the H&H forum. It actually made me laugh to be honest.

Hum, wonder what %age of people actually buy the Horse and Hound or have ever bought it and if there are many here who have never read or bought it.

Hmm, see I would have expected about that on here - especially given some of the "indifferents" dont object to hunting, just don't do it themselves.

I suspect that you might be surprised how many on here don't read H&H regularly...

I don't read H&H regularly any more. I used to but it is full of junk now. I don't need shopping advice ta very much. I want the hunt reports, the show reports and not a great deal else. Bring back old school horse and hound I say!! When it wasn't all 'slick' and full of nonsense. That's what Horse magazine is for surely?

Don't be mad TFC. I subscribed for years and years so you've had plenty of money off of me!! :D

I'm probably a "for" - I've read the research that shows, in welfare terms, hunting is on a par with shooting, trapping, poisoning etc, and I like the fact that the fitter foxes are more likely to survive rather than indiscriminately culling anything that's seen. I don't have any problem with the fox being "torn apart" because it's dead by then, and I don't see any problem in the fact that people get enjoyment out of it - after all, we eat chicken because we enjoy it - and it is for enjoyment; we wouldn't starve if we couldn't eat meat - and the average chicken on a supermarket shelf is far more of a welfare case than a nice happy free-range fox. I'll even confess that I love the "dressing up" and the tradition and the etiquette that surrounds it. Hunting contributes a lot to the countryside in various ways.

On the other hand, AFAIK fox populations are managed in hunting areas so that there's something to hunt - I'm happy to be corrected if that's wrong! - but for me that crosses the boundary away from pest control and into something less attractive, and I'm not quite so comfortable with that. Even without that, though, there would still be some foxes that needed controlling, so on balance I'm in favour.

I've never been hunting because I'm a wuss, but I'd love to go when I can pluck up the courage!

I pretty much expected it to be, in fact I thought that there may be less hunters. Horse and Hound is the only weekly horse publication, so is more up to date with new. It also publishes previews and reports on big shows and events. It is pretty much the place where most people would look for a horse for sale, so pulls a lot of readers with that. Over all I bet only 20% of the magazine, over twelve months, is designated to hunting. Its an all rounder equine "newspaper" really. I suppose it has had to evolve over the years. It is obviously pro hunt, but its not really in your face hunting.. Something like The Field is much more so..

I put against, but I'll admit I'm actually unclear on what the current rules are, as everyone seems to say something different. Often when I read posts on here it doesn't sound like the "ban" actually really bans anything very much .

I've been against fox hunting since I was a little girl - I always thought foxes were beautiful. I'm not quite so militant as I was, but it's a moral decision that I stand by. I'd love to have a go at drag hunting though, but I don't think that would do my mare's joints much good (arthritis).

Foxhunting provides a service to the farmer and landowner. Foxhunting ensures the fittest, healthy foxes remain in our countryside as does stag hunting. Any form of hunting only exists due to the goodwill and support of the landowner. The hunt ensures good stewardship of its country, maintaining coverts, fencelines and a deadstock service.

I would suggest before anyone votes they should at least have the good manners and intelligence to understand what they are voting about.

There are very few landowners that will allow a load of horses to trash their land in the name of draghunting. All draghunting provides to the farmer is smashed fences and ploughed up fields.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but it is so disappointing and sad that many horse owners have little or no knowledge of the countryside and farming. Perhaps these people should keep their horses in an urban setting and stick to the indoor school.

The majority of horses will benefiit from hunting and it certainly teaches the rider how to cross country.

There's never a LIKE button when you need one.

Wow ! And the award for the most sanctimonious post goes to..

It's refreshing to see a well reasoned argument rather than someone just taking a polar position.

People can vote for their politicians based on tribal loyalty. If that's allowed than I don't think that we can make an intelligence test and understanding of the topic (which seems to me to equate with agreeing with you) a prerequisite for voting on a Horse and Hound poll.

The most enjoyable riding I have done has been out hunting (before the ban).

Having seen a poor fox that had been shot, badly, and survived for 2 weeks with the top of his head missing before being finished off, a relatively quick kill must be more favourable than that. Poor thing must have been in agony :(

My view, it's not a great one, is that I think it's a sport as much as shooting or fishing is. Why ban one without banning the other? At least fox hunting is useful!

I bet if anyone had a fox problem, or kept chickens, they'd want the hunt back!
