:(. Foxy is very green, and doesn't always pick her feet up, I wally think I need to do some schooling with her, she trips. Good trip on most hacks on the way home, farrier has really helped with shoes, left the front clip off, but today She today she tripped, and face planted the Tarmac, I stayed on , but was close to coming off, poor love has a really sore nose.
Have asked saddle lady to come again just in case it's her saddle as she's gained condition, but suspect its a cob thing! he doesn't Amble along but guess I didn't have her up together enough!! does anyone have Any tips? I really don't want that to happen again!

How frightening for you, hope you're ok. All I can suggest is using more transitions an half halts to try and help balance more.
Mine has faceplanted in the field when we have been schooling an it's quite a confidence shaker.
Are you having lessons to help?

Maybe you need to keep her mind on the job, is she just plodding along? If so Id vary what your doing and maybe doing a bit of roadschooling :)

Hope her wee nose is better soon, lucky you didnt faceplant as well.

I just wrote a long reply and lost it grrrrr........ Basically she was just backed, weak, and had 3 foals prior to me having her ( shes just 6) and was driven I think, she used to canter up hedges and veer to the left, she was so unbalanced, but have done loads with her, funrides, gates, etc etc, she is lovely now and doesn't rear anymore ( used to rear in confusion to the questions I asked). She didn't trip on the 5 mile hack until 1/2mile from home, she did a fairly good one and I did my hand out and thrusted ( seems to be what I do lol) and we recovered, then 200 yds from home, she did this trip, I felt safe, but she did a double one and her nose his the ground, I was so close to coming off, my lower leg went back and i went to her neck, but she got up easily, I wasn't shaken, but I felt she was!
The first trip she was rushing and as I asked her to calm down she shook her head and tripped as she wasn't concentrating, the 2nd trip, we were walking fast, but I woldn't say I had her between hands and bottom, so guess she was walking fast but loose. I find it really difficult to get her round! I will get her saddle checked as an emergency as she is getting a bit girthy and moving her bum away fromthe mounting block, she doesnt feel quite right , shes telling me something! Maybe the saddle is stopping her from walking properly,if thats ok I think I might need somehelp on schooling her!

tripping a lot can indicate more serious problems, if she was mine i would be taking her shoes off and giving her back the feeling in her feet, then she can judge what they are doing and it stops the shoes masking anything more serious that may be going on. then getting a vet check if it continues

If its not the saddle DD then I find shoulder in/out (alternate to keep equal and keep them listening) a really useful tool for having to think about where the front paws are going. Mines a ****** for tripping, although his is more of a lazy issue ;)

How scary for you both! I think I would be inclined to get her checked out by a vet if it is a common occurrence.

Do you ride her in knee boots? If not it may be a good idea....

Vet has seen her 3 times since February, for routine things, such as teeth and vaccinations, he checked her for soundness, she was unshod then and tripping, I had the first shoes put on her, he agreed he didn't think there was anything wrong with her, as shes not tripping that often on hacks and usually just before home, he felt it was a forehand thing especially as she was driven previously. But thankyou for your comments Twiggy! I must add she was shod because she wore her horn down to nothing and was extremely sore from our 10+ hacks ... I would have preferred to keep her unshod, but wasn't practical for the amount of miles we do.

Budsmum...... Freddie our baby is tripping too, am sure it's just a cob thing! Not panicking or worried about anything else, vet did reassure me....... I shall try your shoulder in method! X

Defo a cob thing, they are naturally on the forehand anyway I think so when Buds really can't be asked he just doesnt pick his feet up. He is bad downhills, just slight ones, not steep ones (have to concentrate for them!) so thats when I use it.
It is a very crude version of a shoulder in, but it is still that control of his shoulders and hind quarters, probs making me ride him more together too.
He always wears knee boots on the roads now as he has hit the deck a few times in the past, wont protect poor foxels nose though!! :(

And no he has nada wrong with him, tame vet gave him a full check up inc. xrays during his hock op aftercare, his foot conformation is also fine, I do agree however without shoes (as he was footy) he never tripped.

Saying that he has never tripped hunting!! Faaar too exciting! xx

Exactly we have done some exciting rides, we even bumped into the stag hounds, no tripping then lol..... she will foxhunt this season, so fingers crossed no splatting! I have just ordered some knee boots from ebay, so will ride her in those! Am about to pm you!! X

mine was girthy ,tripping occasionally and leaning on the forehand difficult to turn when ridden and it was all hoof pain even though we were careful with grass and feeding soaked hay we needed to be stricter shes now ok though.

My previous cob used to trip a lot when his toes got the teensiest bit too long.

Current coblet doesn't trip as such, but occasionally 'forgets' a front leg and almost thumps it down. Almost a stutter in the walk rhythm if that makes sense? Doesn't seem to affect his balance but is uncomfortable to sit on - always feels like I thump on his back a bit when he does it. Always happens when he's not really concentrating - eg having a nose at a gateway hacking then he forgets to keep his legs moving in the right direction. Stops as soon as I hold him together a bit though!

Not meaning to worry you but have a chat with your vet about it! A horse on our yard started tripping and it turned out she has a massive heart murmour and when she wasn't getting enough blood tripped and went on her knees.

Not meaning to scare you x

I'd be inclined to ask for a referral if your vet thinks there is nothing wrong with her, if she keeps tripping like that. If nothing else, it can't be fun for either of you :(

Schooling schooling. Over cavaletti, ground poles. Always knee boots for any work (don't want broken knees) you need to get her working well and using herself on the flat. Plenty of muscle buildi g exercises and get her working from behind, not stumbling along on theforehand x

Yep I agree its an on the forehand thing, or it is with my mare anyway. She used to trip a lot but not she is more off the leg and starting to work from behind it happens a lot less. It still happens in the field or when I am leading her, she's just very lazy!

Keeping feet in trim does help, she does it more when they get long. You could ask your fsrrier about rolling the toe.
