I’m not sure what the issue is??
Surely it’s more efficient for farrier to do the whole yard on the same day rather than coming back and forth.

We have a farrier who just comes to do most of the yard at once. It is a problem. He does them on the day he wants in the order he wants. I work part time and if I was booking for mine I'd book for a day off but nope, it has to be on the day he chooses and so I need to use half a day's leave every 6 weeks.

He also likes to get the shoes out of the way before the trims so 10 horses wait in while he spends the time he could have done them all on 2 or 3.

Then the owners who fawn over him go next 🙄

Its usually close to lunchtime when he gets to mine so they're spinning in the stables wanting to be out and unsurprisingly not the best behaved.

It's crap but he has the monopoly on the yard so no other farrier can be bothered coming unless it's for shoeing. And he is a good farrier.

I really don't understand the lack of empathy in some comments above. As a paying customer it's not unreasonable to want to book a time that suits you.

I work very full time (so I can pay the farrier/vet!) and we all know finding competent freelance staff to hold is almost impossible. And at this time of year really the cob needs to dry out from the night before. I book as we finish the time before and reliably book every 6 weeks with just the odd tweak for competition schedules. I also give the vets a list of dates and times I can do for routine work. You might have to use a less popular (potentially for a reason, but not always!) farrier but it’s got to work both ways.

I wouldn't dream of dictating times or dates to a farrier. Or a vet.
I don't with the vet, except to remind them for pre booked appts that I've no mains power and therefore no decent lighting. Obs that goes out the window for emergency visits.

I'm not 'dictating' with farrier 🙂 but pre booking as 1st call on a suitable date. Suits me, suits the fuzzies - as if ground v wet etc I'll pop them in overnight to get legs and feet dry. Farrier turns up pretty well on time, I have coffee waiting 🙂

Vets no. I book and she lets me know a time just before. So if it’s a routine thing I just book in advance for a day I (am lucky enough) to be able to switch stuff round.
Farrier I book each visit at the time he’s with me, so 5/6 weeks in advance and I would expect to stick to that time.
That said we often switch fairly last thing, but that is because my horses are fine with going a few days or a week either way and we have a mutual understanding that stuff happens.
We have both text each other the day before and said somethings come up.

Dictating is a bit strong. I'm a customer, I want it to be a time which works for both of us.

Don't you have other things to schedule into your day? Do the dentist, physio and saddle fitter have the same right to dictate appointments to you?

My vet is tons more flexible than the farrier. I give a date and rough time of day then find out slot the day before and they call me if it all goes pear-shaped, which is understandable for a vet.

My farrier comes on a Saturday when I’m off work, arranged in advance. They give me a time and I work my day around the time given but I’ve never had a farrier that would arrange for a day I’d be working through the week. Mine are at home though.
Vets I would take time off for.

9/10 I always try to accommodate my time around the farrier/vets hectic schedules. If I can’t I pay livery service to hold my pony in my place etc

That said, I have had a farrier in the past who promised to turn up and do the yard from 11am and didn’t turn up til 5pm.. nobody could get hold of him. When he did turn up, no reason why he was late or apology. He did this numerous times and I ended up switching farriers.
