Hi,
not posted much recently as moved back home but still lurking. Just wondering if anyone has some amazing advice!!
My new 4yr old TB fractured his cannon bone 9 weeks ago, it was originally mis diagnosed by 3 vets as bruising/foot abcess!! so he was on field rest for 3 weeks. got a 4th opinion and xrays showed obvious greenstick fracture at back of cannon bone, below bottom of splint bones.
He;s been on 6 weeks box rest, stable bandaged, etc. Took him for 2nd xrays last tuesday and it showed very little improvement and there is less bone density around the injury.

So anybody got any wonder cures????
I;m not stupid, i know it is a case of rest rest rest etc but i have put him on a calcium supplement and have ordered Comfrey to give him.
Just getting very worried as vets are stumped and if no improvement in 4 weeks then no idea what the next step will be!!

IDeas?? please????
poor boy is miserable!!

We had a pony with a broken hock, and another who had to have chips removed from both hocks (came to us with the problem ). Equielements and James Hart Regenerate were amazing! Both horses came sound much sooner than surgeons expected. The pony was given slim chances of living a pain free life, let alone continue to bomb around sponsored rides and hunter trials a year later! They aren't cheap, but I swear by them. The second horse came sound and pronounced 'very floaty and moving beautifully' by our vet in just over half the time surgeon said it would take :D

Good luck, get well soon Squirrel's horse :D

Comfrey all the way...isnt called Knitbone for nothing !! Goodluck.. my old boy had a spiral fracture from Kneee to fetlock in May 09 and was on x-ties for 12 weeks. He came home that August and was allowed to be ridden from the box after 5 months. Hes been A1 ever since. xx

comfrey and magnets and box rest. when off box rest then field rest. and then 12 months moseing around once he is out and sound. dont be too quick to write him off mother nature is very good given time. watch your calcium supplement doesnt tip the balance in the calcium/phospherous ratio for strong bone developement. wishing you all the best but dont be in a hurry ...

My horse fractured his Radius, was cross tied for weeks, x rayed along the way and was doing better than expected. We were coming to the time when he was due to be allowed free in the box so was x rayed again as a precaution and healing had slowed down, vet wasnt overly worried but there was barely any improvement at all. He recomended another 2 weeks cross tying, then another! but next time he was xrayed things were better. His recovery was about 20 weeks from doing the injury to being turned out. Hang in there Im sure everything will come good in time.

thank you everyone.
some positive things to look towards like other horses recovering from similar injuries. But just gutted about the time it will take but guess i'll have to be patient. :-(
forgot to say he is wearing a magnetic rug for maximum allowed time every day.
he did it trotting around the school, just went lame so suddenly!!!

crikey! sounds like you've had a hard time getting to the bottom of that, but bet you're glad that you got that 4th opinion!

I suppose that the only blessing is that you're not missing out on much with all this snow!

I can't be of any help, but I do hope he improves, sending you both some healing vibes.

Had his shoes off this morning to help increase circulation and seeing as it going to be a long haul thought there was no point having them on!!

Oh crikey! Best of luck.

Sorry no advice except my very good friend's horse fractured his leg above the knee and he was on box rest all summer - he is not being ridden! As a positive note - once it is healed it will be much stronger than before because of the way bone mends.
