Hi, came off a youngster and fractured my collar bone on Friday, have been told I won't be riding for 6 weeks, how realistic is this as I am a self employed rider and need to be back in the saddle ASAP?! Thanks

Everyone's different. Depends how bad its fractured and progress really. But a minimum 4weeks off at least really especially proper riding. Ps Being self employed especially in your line of work you need to look at keyman insurance.
Hope it heals quick, my OH broke his last Januarys ago and was off work for 7weeks but he did have it operated on after 2 weeks of breaking it-he did a great job of it lots of pieces!!

I guess it depends on how bad the fracture is to a certain extent.
I fractured the end of my collarbone as well as some ribs and was back riding in about 2 weeks albeit uncomfortably and only very quietly hacking out on a very sensible horse. However, a word of warning, two years later and I had to have steroid injections to mobilize my shoulder due to the extra bone put down which was rubbing the shoulder tendons. I'm not sure whether I had aggravated it by doing too much too soon.

The more you rest it the better chance of a good recovery rather than rushing it and risking further complications or long term damage.

i broke shoulder and collar bone in 80's. Currently have a broken upper arm arm 1 week 3 days :( sucks .

fraid im self employed too a whole livery yard i cannot run. Thank god i have some awesome liveries to step in

fraid my collar bone did not heal right looks like this _--- end's overlap have a bump and joint degeneration in there as due to shoulder break in conjunction left me with disability. Hope you heal well

Broke mine in July and it was definitely a good six weeks before I rode and that was against the hospitals advice!
I rode my very quiet horse after just longer than six weeks, but didn't do anything strenuous or ride Topaz until 8 weeks. Mine was also a fracture, no surgery or anything, and I was only discharged from hospital 14 weeks post injury.
Not what you want to hear granted but it is a very slow healing bone and you will cause long lasting damage if you don't give it chance to heal. Mine is still weak and a bit sore/achy even now so it really does take time.
You have my sympathies it is a blooming painful thing to break!

I broke mine 7yrs ago and did it good and proper so it required a plate and screws. It felt so good after the op that I decided to dig out a whole winter's worth of deep litter that weekend, regretted it after.

I rode out hacking on a loose rein the next week and was hunting after 4 weeks. 7yrs later the only thing that sets it off is doing star jumps!

I'm currently on crutches with a broken foot. No weight bearing for 2 weeks which is jolly boring and then hopefully partial weight bearing. On the plus side I'm allowed to ride and go swimming so it could be worse.

If you were a horse I think I would shoot you.:D

Also have a fractured collar bone, had a bad break from a fall six weeks ago. Was initially told would take 4 to 6 weeks to heal but have to return for more xrays in a weeks time and still in the sling til then. From researching on the net that seems to be the minimum time for initial healing to occur but will take a couple of months for the bone to be as strong as before. Its generally not recommended to do contact or 'collision sports' ie riding for a couple of months to ensure you don't rebreak. I sympathise with your situation but think its worth taking your doctors advice, its a pain right now but you don't want to risk being saddled with a lasting problem if it doesn't heal right.

Thanks for the replies, not quite what I wanted to hear but what I expected. Am waiting to go back for X-rays. As long as I keep it still it hasn't been too painful and I can muck out one handed, unfortunately most of the horses I ride can be quirky so no hacking on a long rein fr a while, luckily I have good friends to keep them ticking over. Thanks, get better soon everyone!

I broke my a few years back.
Totally snapped it falling off.
I got back on after the 6 weeks in a sling, I was told to wait another 6 week but I didn't,
It didn't heal properly and I ended up having an op to put a metal plate in it.
I was told not to ride for 3 months.
That time i listened and its been good for the past few years.

Don't rush it!

Mine got broken in a stupidly freak tumble a year ago. Horse tripped and somehow catapulted me upwards and I landed and pivoted on my right shoulder. I'm still suspicious that she meant to do it! It was horrendously painful and had to be pinned. It took 4 weeks before I could drive and I started back riding properly at 12 weeks. I had another fall recently on same shoulder and although nothing broke I pulled lots of tendons and muscles. However I have discovered that a lot of what I'm now trying to fix is due to the fall when the collarbone broke and I stopped doing physio too soon. So more haste less speed when it comes to collarbones it seems.
Hope you're not too uncomfortable meanwhile.

Try a figure of eight bandage plus some padding, holds the collarbone in place and you can muck out/drive and do gentle ridden exercise. Mind you I did mine many years ago, just starting to feel the effects in my 60's
