A friends horse kept at my yard was kicked (we think) today and fractured his leg (just above knee on off side fore leg) im not sure what kind of fracture it is but its not a spiral one.
Any one experienced this with their horse/another horse and what was the outcome.
(he was an medium dressage horse! any chance of him getting back to this do you think)

thanks

(also in new lounge)

Several years ago a friends hunter had a fracture on the cannon bone. He was on box rest & had calcium supplements (from vet) and went on to make a full recovery. I hope your friends horse is ok and I am sure the vet will give a guarded prognosis of his future prospects.

Hi. One of my geldings fractured his splint bone (as a result of a kick we think) several years ago. He was put on box rest for three months, followed by three months in a small yard then several months out in the field.

He was only a four year old and just started a very promising dressage career with a number of wins (and an offer to buy him - he fractured the splint bone a week after I turned the offer down).

Although a small egg shaped lump on his leg (where the fracture was) remained, this slowly decreased in size over time.

He also returned to his dressage career, competing to medium grade.

So although this fracture was different to the one your friend's horse has, there is always hope and with time the fracture will heal well and he can return to dressage.

My boy had a clean break through the out side splint bone & a hair line fracture through the inside, He went on to jump affiliated & dear I say it was better than he was before!

how long did hairline fracture take to heal cos my horse got one and though hes not lame he is on box rest till end jan.my vet not very specific about anything beyond that.
