My warmblood mare fractured her hind navicular bone in June 2020. She was not expected to recover and unlikely ever to be sound. We did 4 months box rest and slowly introduced turnout. Then many months of walking on the roads to eventually incorporating trot and canter. It was a very slow process. She initially had a bar shoe and pad fitted but now in normal shoes. She was intermittently unlevel but gradually that lessened. I ride her every day and have returned to training with great success. It appears she has made a full recovery and is performing back at the same level (medium dressage). I have never been able to find anyone who has had this injury and came through. Would love to hear from someone even if the outcome wasn't what you had hoped. Thank you.

Mine had a navicular fracture in June 2020. She was initially very lame, but vet thought it was just a bruise. 3 months later not quite right still, so x rayed, only to find a still very prominent break. She did 9 months box rest. Only because there was no alternative other than to stick her out with a big herd. She was so well behaved that it was easier to keep her in. She's fine now. Back to our long distance hacking.

My old mare had a navicular fracture, had a course of tildren and field rest. Came back sound and she carried on eventing and it never caused her a problem again.
Thanks for your reply, it's really helpful to hear from people who have made a recovery. Most horses seem to get euthanized.

It's interesting to hear some positive results. I was given a very poor prognosis and offered PTS. I am so glad I made the effort to attempt rehabilitation.

Mine was virtually sound at the point of Xray. Bloody hell was the reaction of the vet. I asked about putting her down and they said that they couldn't in good faith put such a sound horse down.

Blimey that's amazing, just shows despite the very rare nature of this unjury there are always exceptions so good to know.
