So my wee man had a trailer accident (we were static, he leapt over the front bar, somersaulted then got stuck under the bar) in August. He was checked by a vet several times after (immediately, 1 week later, 3 weeks later and 8 weeks later). He never took a lame step, had some superficial scrapes but had some quite significant bruising across his back.

We rested him and worked with our vet who said he appeared to have been very lucky and escaped relatively unscathed. However, when he came back into work I immediately knew something was up so we went on a hunt for what the answer was and have no discovered a fracture involving a facet join in his neck (C2 or 3 can’t remember which!).

My vet has said prognosis is guarded with arthritis risk. Apparently these type of injuries tend to actually deteriorate with time. I know only time will tell, but just wondered if anyone had any experiences with anything similar?

Aww. Bless him. It’s really good that you know and can manage him accordingly. I think a neck injury is what caused my older horse his problems long term but colic got him at 22 so definitely not necessarily a life limiting issue. Wishing you every bit of luck.

A friends horse had an accident which resulted in a neck fracture which sounded a lot worse than yours. It took a long time to resolve but the horse did go on to do low level rc stuff for many years afterwards.
