Hi all,

To cut a long story short, my lad was diagnosed with a fractured pedal bone 6 weeks ago (after having 3 weeks already on box rest).

The first lot of xrays (6 weeks ago) showed he had fractured his pedal bone on the wing - however, more towards the middle than outer. The x-ray also showed that it was just on the edge of the joint. Prognosis looked really hopeful, that he would be able to return to low level eventing and riding club level work.

6 weeks on, he was re xrayed yesterday. The xrays yesterday showed the fracture has infact gone straight through the coffin joint. The vet is now more apprehensive about him being able to do the job I would want him to do. Especially, as he now has a risk of developing oesteoarthitis. The vet is taking the xrays to the specialist over the weekend and will ring me with further information Monday.

So my question is, has anybody had any experiences with pedal bone fractures, which has also penetrated the coffin joint? If so, did the horse come back into work? Did it implicate their ridden career?

Many thanks,

Kiri

No pedal bone fracture here but mine has had an issue with her coffin join for a number of years and has in fact been in the vets again today for more x rays and to check for a pedal bone fracture which she doesn't have but a few others issues in her foot along with coffin joint pain.

Really hop you get some answers I'm going through such an emotional time with my mare at the moment.

I've seen one which I though was a no hoper come right after plastic shoes for a couple of years along with a huge time on box rest.
