Hello

My TB exracehorse now eventer has been diagnosed with a fractured pedal bone - although they think it's an old injury from the track

3 months Box rest does anyone have any good boredom preventing tips....
Mirrors / toys etc on the way already

Could you do small pen rest instead? ie 14 x 14 electric tape pen, than at least he gets some grass to eat and freash air?

My first pony fractured hers, in 'the old days' and we just turned her out for a year, came back 100% sound. My 29yr old fractured hers in March this year, and I chose not to box rest her due to her age, and she is probably 95% sound now.

hi
mine is on box rest atm ,he's been in 3 months already and is facing another 5 months :(

if yours gets a bit "much" when you get to the leading out stage i can reccomend v-calm a herbal calmer that really works
i was about to give up on mine and chuck him out to take his chance but this stuff really saved the day and he is now managable and now that i can walk him everyday he has settled and no longer needs it
he was on the max dose though and its £20 for a small bottle that lasted 2 weeks ,expensive but it really did work

mine has been a lot better with a strict routine
he goe's "out" in the morning into a field shelter were he can even scratch with his friends over the door :)
i then go to work  then after i have done all jobs and ridden other horse ,he goes for his walk (he's up to 20mins)
then come "in" to his stable for his tea and i spend whatever time i have left with him brushing him or even just reading a book in his stable with him
iv'e also bought a handheld masage pad thing which he loves as he's not really into grooming

he has settled down now with the combination of the above + the standard toys etc

although i think the field shelter has saved the day ,it will really help her if she can see or even touch other horses over the door or be in a very small/stable size paddock although this was not possible for mine as i knew he would just jump it :o

hope there's something useful for you and good luck it is a very stressful time when on box rest and i was tearing my hair out thinking i just can't do it :(

good luck hope she comes right for you :)

I agree with the field 'pen' rest. I had a horse on box rest for 5 months, luckily throughout the summer and I made her a small stable sized pen so she could have social interaction over the tape with the others. I made it gradually larger as she was allowed to do more and more. I always box rest in this way if it is in the summer. In the winter it is not so bad for them in the stable as there is always one or two others in the stables at all times as they go out in the all weather turnout in a rota.
