Has any one ever had a horse with this problem and how did you cope?

My mare has kicked a brick wall in her stable and fractured her pedal bone. After vet and farrier came out to x-ray etc we were referred to Oakham (very nice place!) and with vet and farrier their took more x-rays and have had her shod with a bar shoe instead of opting for an operation to screw it back together. She is 5 weeks pregnant and has to be box-rested for the next 4 weeks then go back for more x-rays and reshoeing.

Can any one suggest how to make the next four weeks easier for her and me!!!!

Cheers x x

My horse fractured the wing of his pedal bone a month after I got him. He was box-rested with special shoes from July until December (with bar shoes) then I was allowed to ride him and build up work slowly and was given the all clear to start jumping in March the following year. He is now (touch wood!) fine, having had no further problems with it and when x-rayed 3 years later (for a different lameness problem) I was told it had healed perfectly and there was no sign of it or any arthritic changes.

Have faith, it does seem like a long time but all being well she should be fine at the end of it.

His inital box-rest meant he was not even allowed to venture out of the stable so I had to use all sort of tricks to keep him amused. I used:
<ul type="square"> [*]hid apples and carrots in my horses hay net
[*]threw carrots round his bed for him to find when I left for work
[*]a lickit
[*]a treat ball
[*]you could get a mirror
[*]leave a radio on
[*]hang things up in different parts of the stable eg swedes, carrots, haynets [/list]

PM if you want to share a moan and keep us updated on her progress

hi there, my horse fractured his pedal bone last may08. He also had a very bad laceration to his pastern/fetlock joint which was leaking synovial fluid. Our vet was quite concerned about the fluid but recommended boxrest. My farrier recommended not to change the shoe at the time as I thought a bar shoe might help. I left him with an ordinary shoe and used laser treatment on the foot and the cut. After 4 weeks he was pretty sound and I started grazing him in hand building this up to 30 minutes twice a day. We took x rays again after about 10 weeks and they were much much better. after a further 2 weeks on the walker I was able to turn him out full time and after 1 month in the field he is now back in full work. In my case the horse is a TB, and he fractured his off hind pedal bone

Hi thanks to both of you, sorry that i have only just read your posts however i had to have her put down on Thursday!
We went to Oakham and had x-rays and bar shoe applied. Got her home Wednesday evening and by Thursday morning when i went down she had cast herself and cut straight through an artery on oposite back leg. All my hard work gone up in smoke and i miss her so much.
