My mare has just been diagnosed with a fractured pedal bone. She is on box rest for 6 weeks then to be reassessed and farrier is using a support glue on shoe. Just wondered what people's thoughts were on magnetic hoof boots?

I'm not sure I'd be happy with a glue on shoe for a fractured pedal bone. I would have thought you would want the foot kept as rigid as possible while it heals and plastic shoes will let the horse's foot flex. I would ask your vet about what the farrier is proposing, of he doesn't already know.

I think all the medical trials with magnets have shown that they have no effect. I wouldn't want to alter the balance and use of the foot with a boot, but I don't suppose it would hurt while on box rest.

You definitely don't want to nail a shoe on with a fractured pedal bone, the concussion risks moving the fragments. Glue on shoes are both effective and the standard treatment.

Sigafoos are metal glue-on shoes.

Just be prepared for really knackered hoof wall when they come off, as it affects the hoof wall exactly the same as acrylic glue on nails for humans.

My friend's horse recovered very well with nailed metal shoes on.

That's interesting Casey, I've never heard of glue on metal shoes.

It can be relevant exactly where the fracture line is, whether it involves the articular surface, and how potentially unstable the fracture is.
A fracture outside the joint capsule is less crucial.

Thanks for the replies. My farrier is one of the top remedial farriers used by the vets so she is in extremely good hands. She now has a bar shoe on which is padded out with some sort of glue and a cast. The vet was who suggested the glue on shoe but after speaking to my farrier he was pretty impressed with what he suggested.
Farrier said magnetic boots improve blood flow which can aid healing and no harm in trying as even if they don't do any good it won't do any harm. Prognosis is positive just a long road ahead. Fingers crossed for a trouble free recovery.
