My 17.1 Havoverian has just been diagnosed with a fractured pelvis after him not going quite right and not gaining weight over the summer. We had a second opinion last week as my vets told me he was lame because of a hoof abscess and wasn't gaining weight as he was just a bit of a 'stressy horse'.
We think it happened about 3 months ago when after 10 days of crippling lameness a hoof abscess emerged (£1,200 of vets fees later too). New vet thinks it was a broken pelvis and the abscess came out as a result of him compensating his weight. I have been told to turn him away for the winter.
Just wanted people's opinions and prognosis
Many thanks.

Have they x-rayed his pelvis? It's just that you said that the Vet 'thinks' that is the problem, rather than giving the impression of a firm diagnosis?

A lady at my yard has a horse who broke his pelvis. He returned to work (hacking) but struggles up hills a bit. He's got some other problems too, and taken all together, she's retiring him. He's 17.

Based in Warwickshire. He is going to be turned away till April with the hope that he can return to Dressage. Such a talented horse, its a real shame it couldn't have been picked up earlier. He's 12 but fairly low mileage so fingers crossed he can come back into work steadily next year.

I had a tb who we got back from loan, very lame, very asymetrical on his hips (I'm talking several inch height diff). He ended up being effectively box rested for about 2 months then turned away for about 6-8 months. We never had a definitive diagnosis but it was thought he had a fracture in his pelvis. About a year later he was back jumping 1.30-1.45 (not with me tho!)
