my 10 year old TB had a nasty fall in Nov, He is still slightly short and iam really worried. He is not beinging ridden only lunged, His fracture is not on the joint towards his hind and a bit of the bone has broken away. the vets say he should be 100% sound in the end but iam worried am i asking to much to soon?

Would it be worth seeing a physio for him and asking if there is any homework you can do with him, maybe raised poles, or the body wrap idea, or similiar to help improve his way of going and build the appropriate muscle and use his body in the correct way.

This is a link to the bodywrap idea

And a link for swimming horses- not advocating you use this particular swim pool but just to give you an idea of what it is about:

Horse on our yard fractured his pelvis Feb 08, he had 6 months box rest, then turnout on a slightly hilly field, then October time he came back into work, at present he is ridden everyday and is looking fab. He also had physio every month that he was off to help with the muscles, so that would be worth looking at. At the end of the day it is a long process. Owner also did raised trot poles to get him working.

Thanks for you feed back. I got back lady coming out again monday to check on him. I just dont want to push him and mess it all up. iam so nervous at working him at the moment i really dont want to do damage, My vet at newmarket said i should be riding by now but iam worried.

I would say as long as you are sensible and don't exprect to much too quick then there is no reason why you should not get back on board and start doing some strengthening work with him, if all was not right then the vet wouldn't say start riding him. Good luck.

on optomistic note Well Armed won the Dubai World Cup after a severe pelvic fracture three years before , it is generally not a career ending injury so if your vet says to ride him i would go ahead

The vet thinks mine may have a fractured pelvis ... he's coming back today for yet another look ! The horse is on box rest at the moment , but I noticed that when he walked and trotted in the field he used his hind leg , nodding lame , but at canter he sometimes holds it up like you see terrier type dogs carrying their back leg ??? Never seen that before .... mind you .. I've never , as far as I know , seen a fractured pelvis . Any ideas ?

mine does not nod lame as its from his hind just short. horses can fracture their pelvis by stopping short at the gate. its a nightmare iam off to yard now to trot him up after two days rest
