i imagine a number of members here have had the misfortune to injure thier pelvis, from riding or otherwise. breaks, fractures or bruising

would anybody share their experiences and give a clue as to recovery time.

currently any movement hurts and it takes ten minutes to go four stride to the bathroom:(

Someone hunting with me two years ago bust his pelvis landing over a hedge without leaving the saddle!!!

He was out of action for that season, but out hunting again the next. I don't think he was completely pain free, but enough to ride and jump hedges.

I hope that helps.

I came off last year and had a fracture in my pelvis. The hospital told me to keep moving. It was very painful, but not as painful as sitting for long periods. I managed to do the basic jobs for four ponies, It took ages, invested in a hose pipe and a poo scraper, these made life a bit easier. It took 6 weeks to be pain free, and a few more weeks before I tried riding again. I came off my young pony again and tweaked my back, another fortnight of pain. I put my pony out on loan. I am still trying to get my confidence fully back. I am winning slowly. I am going out on mini hacks by myself now, and a bit longer ones with an unmounted escort. I am extremely nervous at even the thought of riding out with another pony again. But not ready for that yet. The hospital gave me walking sticks and a walking frame, but I found them more of a hindrance than a help. All movements has to be very slow and deliberate. It took a while to get moving after sitting for even short periods. I hope you are on the mend soon.

you are obviously mmade of much stronger stuff than me misty05. i can do virtually nothing. i suppose it depends on which part of the pelvis is inured. my pain is in a very embarrassing location. the doctor rang me this afternoon as they had missed the fracture. she told me to rest as much as possible but get some walking in at times
i am doing very short walks when i can - just to the bathroom for now. seems recovery will be long and slow. pretty annoyed at coming off so easily,

Recovery time depends on where the fracture is! I broke the back of my pelvis at the right sacro illiac joint as a younger woman. I know young folks bounce back easier - but it was about 6 weeks before I felt able to ride. I don't recall the pain being too bad after the first couple of weeks - I was certainly entirely up and about and managed to party.

Then about 6 years ago I broke the front of my pelvis - the symphasis pubis where the 2 bones join at the front. Every step was agony as the entire pelvis rocks with each step. I'm afraid I can't remember much about how long the pain was that bad - at least a couple of weeks. Once the swelling dies down your physio can give you a broad elasticated belt to wear to hold the pelvis together. I do remember the relief of tightening that thing up for the first time!

I came off a youngster onto a road and fractured my sacrum, again the hospital missed it at first and sent me on my way, I walked out the hospital. It was only the next day when the senior consultant had reviewed the xrays it came to light - have to say I was very pleased in a way as it validated how much pain I was in and that I wasn't just a complete woose! ;) Have to say the first week was agony, couldn't do a thing, took me 20mins just to get from a lying down to standing position in order to get out of bed! I was in tears I was feeling so sorry for myself! Slept most of the time dosed up on painkillers. The next week wasn't much better but have to say it did get better much quicker than I expected and from about week 2, week on week it was amazing the difference. Honest, hang in there! I went back to work after 5 weeks, mostly because I so bored at home! I was still in pain but it was manageable, I just moved very slowly! ;) I would say it was about week 7 I started feeling just about normal but I still had a bit of pain and I waited til week 10 to get back on board but that was just me being extra cautious I think. I still get a bit of an ache now and then but I am 7 months after and I have now had another 2 falls in recent weeks and survived! :)

But anyway, after all that I wanted to say that I feel your pain! I know it is awful just now but it does get better and you will be suprised how quickly considering how you feel now! Hope you are feeling better soon, gentle hugs :)

looks like i am in for a very frustrating time, i am bored already, and have so much i need to get sorted. i hope i will feel brave enough to get back on my lovely filly without too much delay. physio? i don't think so, the don't believe in it down here, but i do have a self referral form here...so much to organise.....thanks for your messages. i will be here annoying you all for while it seems.

I fractured my pelvis approx 3 years ago
I had a fall jumping from a 16.2hh mare
A simple fall didnt look extraordrianary lol
I fractured my pelvis around the "ring"
Which is basically the pivot lol

V painful esp the first 2 weeks then got a bit easier . . Moving caused the most pain sitting still not to bad.

I went to a&e and told fine then rang bk to tell me it was fractured also
I actually cried walking to the bathroom as had no pain relief / crutches
Was awful 3 days not knowing it was fractured :(
But once I hit crutches and pain relief it really helped
Has a youngster at the time living out so that really helped :)
Ie no mucking out ect

Driving again after 6-8 weeks normally enough
Was still sore esp wen tired for few months
Did ride but only walk trot from around 5 weeks after

Get the odd niggle now but much better
Rest and follow orders I didn't n took longer to heal
I did too much too soon and caused problems
Feel better :)

So sorry to hear of your injury. Speedy recovery wished!

A lot of factors have to taken into consideration. Type, location and severity of #, along with relative connective tissue damage, any previous #'s, time relativity to previous injury(s) if any, your age, general health, fitness, recommended rehabilitation etc.

Had too many broken and dislocated bits and pieces, some needed surgery, some not. However, #'ed left hip again last August and still causing me jip.

Please take it very, very easy for now. Concentrate on you. Ensure you keep up with pain management and don't push yourself. You sound quite fragile atm. Ice cream and Pizza really works! x

I sustained 3 fractures to my pelvis following a car accident. I was very painful and as my pelvis wasn't stable there was talk of pinning and plating but, due to many other injuries, I was immobile anyway so they decided to just leave it and instructed me not to move about too much.

It was 4 months before I got back on to ride - although I think if it was just my pelvis that was broken, I would of been back on much sooner. When I did get on, climbing on was ok, riding was a little uncomfortable - best to do little and often rather than an epic hack out or a serious schooling session. Dismounting was quite difficult and painful for me - because two of the fractures were at the front of my pelvis, leaning forwards to get off really hurt. To start with (and for a good few weeks until my pelvis got stronger) I had to get off by swinging my leg forwards over my mares neck - then my OH supported me while I slid to the ground. There was another friend holding my horse while this happened - 2 man job to dismount :D

This was 12 years ago. I am fine now but there is still the odd twinge - especially in cold or damp weather.

Sorry to hear of your injury - don't do too much, too soon - take your time to get better and I'm sure you'll be fine soon xx

i had another call this morning from a&e, the Consultant has now reveiwed my case and said i should have been discharged with pain relief and crutches. having managed to find someone to fetch the crutches i can now at least get to the bathroom. i am in for a long frustrating recovery.

woe is me.

In May 2013 I was bucked off I did 3 discs in my back and my muscles , tendons, ligaments etc were torn away from the left side of my pelvis. The nerves on left side of hip where damaged and even now I've not returned feeling to the skin it's just constantly numb. I've been told now it's unlikely to return.

It was a hospital job, I've never felt pain like it, made worse by the muscles in my leg going into crazy spasms, I needed lots of diazapan to easy that off it was terrible.

Anyway I was on crutches for weeks. Off horses for 4 months, the pain was still really , got MRI around 5 months later, back had healed up, they thought maybe the burst discs where causing loss of nerves but the discs had healed.

Anyway to cut a long story short nearly a year later and I have terrible problems with it still :-(

The worse part for me was the nerve pain, holy moly it was intense, when they fired off it would reduce me to a screaming wreak in a nano second.

I think I'd of had less issues had I just broke the pelvis instead of soft tissue damage.

looks like i am in for a long recovery. i also re broke the ribs i broke a month ago. i am already frustrated at not being unable to do very much. i plan on using super glue next time i ride!

oh so sorry OP and all of you who have suffered / are suffering this. Ouch! Hope it mends very quickly. And do please follow doctor's orders! x x

I am also looking at the same thing. I have not broken my pelvis we don't think but 15 yrs ago (am 37) I had a horse walk off a bridge backwards with me on her and land on my right hip as she didn't want to walk through a puddle. not much pain after that but lots pain in hip bone. hosp said not broken. fats forward to now and hurt my coccyx and pelvis and hip last September so cant sit down or do much else. 8 weeks of physio have not touched it. Has gone up my back and affected other areas of my back now. I am seeing a chiro now as Mctimmoney sorted it for 2 days then goes back to how it was. chiro said poss be able to sort me. no riding for 2 weeks at least and may not be able to ride again as it may put it all out again. mine is L4-L5, coccyx and L and R hip plus pelvis. driving is a no really I can walk, sleep is tough as sides and back hurt.
