Fractured splint bone.

Anybody have any experience of this? Horse came out of her stable this morning hopping lame, vet has seen her and suspects fractured splint bone. Hes coming by tomorrow for scans and x-rays but in the meantime shes got anti-inflammatories and bute to get her by.
Worst case scenario, how much would you say this will cost? She is insured and i intend to claim, however i pay the excess (£135) plus 25% of the overall bill.
Also if she has fractured it she will be on 3 months box rest.. How on earth do you keep a 5yo entertained on box rest?! The hanging swede is starting to get boring after only 24 hours apparently! Need some vibes for tomorrow.. Il also post in NL.

I had a mate with one and it was picked up in the vetting when I was selling her! Had no idea she had it as she wasn't lame. But vet found very soft fluidly area and said he suspected it! I had my vet X-ray and it was but was a very small fracture. 6 weeks box rest and she was sorted, typically being a tb she lost weight and a lot of muscle wastage but soon come right coming back in to slow work. The people waited for her and bought her at the end after passing the vet 2nd time. Not much I can suggest apart from lickets and Bordem ball! Apple in the water bucket etc!!! Good luck hope it goes ok for u both.
 
My mare fractured her splint bone but needed an operation to remove the fractured bit of bone. She was able to start inhand walking as soon as she had her bandage off (about 3 weeks post surgery)
I think all in it cost about £1700 - I did most of the bandage changes to save some money (no insurance)
 
Thankyou Erin that's exactly what I was after.. Still awaiting the vet very impatiently! Just wanted a rough idea incase she does need surgery.. Also thankyou hOrsestar, will try the apple in bucket! Hopefully she won't knock it over!
 
H did his and had a similar op to Erin's to remove the broken bit of bone. It depends on where the fracture is and whether the broken fragment has moved as to whether they want to remove it.

The only thing I would say is that unless the fracture is due to a kick, a fractured splint bone often goes hand in hand with a ligament strain. In H's case most of the lameness was actually ligament related. So make sure you scan the ligament too. On the plus side it was all the long slow distance work that we did as rehab that made me take the plunge and start endurance riding - H ended up doing sub five hour 50 milers and winning, and was far fitter after the injury than he ever was before.

My mare was kicked and shattered her splint bone in 19 pieces surgery was £ 2000 but this was back in 95


the link in my signature has many ideas for box rest she was 7 at the time
 
Our mare broke hers, clean break. It cost over £600 in total from start to finish and 12 weeks box rest.
Shes fine now :)

ETA: I had to box rest my 2yo last year, sedalin when he was really off his head, toys and ad lib forage!
 
My pony had a broken splint bone and is just in the final stage of rehab. His I am pretty sure was caused by a kick - broken skin in that area!

He did not need an operation he had a soft cast instead as the break was stable.

It was expensive as he needed his soft cast changing every 10 days and his leg was checked at the same time, this was for 10 weeks, and he also had a 2nd xray too and various follow up vet visits to review his progress. Insurance paid and vet warned me would be expensive due to the soft casts being expensive but I think it was at least £3,000 in vets stuff.

Then of course there are the added costs around being on box rest, my pony does not do stabling so jumped out of his stable on first morning of box rest so ended up going to a professional rehab yard where he could have a grid up. Thankfully he settled in really well there and it turned out that he needed the horse walker and individual restricted turnout so made good use of the facilities at the rehab yard.

My pony had the soft cast on for 10 weeks combined with box rest then had another week on box rest but could go on the walker twice a day but had stable bandage on injured leg when not on walker and then started some turnout as well as going on walker. So at 14 weeks he was able to start ridden work and increased turnout. I think we are on about week 18 and he will probably go home back to living out again at week 20.
 
Here is a photo of what his leg looked like prediagnosis - only 1/10 lame if that and vet thought swelling was infection so he had 10 days of antiobics and out in the field 24/7 plus riding in walk and trot. Swelling did not go down so vet then xrayed and found broken splint bone

Thankyou for the replies! Thanks Leviathan I will take a look at that link :) Luckily she hasnt fractured it!! Confirmed by scans and x-rays yesterday :) so been given anti inflammatories, bute and a local anti inflammitory gel for 4 weeks then reveiw. Vet recons extremely bad bruising and cellulitus, so we will hopefully be on the mend soon!!
