My horse has fractured his splint bone in his hind leg, it's none displaced and should heal well hopefully, slight infection and cellulitis from the cut and the tendon still needs scanning but providing all is well he should heal well. He's currently on box rest with stable bandages on all legs, unsure as whether to remove the other 3 during the day or leave just the backs on?

Any advice on the treatment and rehab of a splint fracture would be greatly appreciated as even though I am working very closely with the vet and rehab centre I want to give him the best chance at recovery :-)

I am currently rehabbing one that had a badly displaced hind splint bone fracture, he had an op to remove it and 8 weeks box rest. He never had his front legs bandaged, they did not fill, the injured leg was bandaged throughout until gradually spending time without it once he was being prepared for turnout and walking daily, his opposite leg was initially bandaged but was injured by the clippers when he went in for scanning resulting in a nasty infection and he was so sore it had to be left open, so he spent most of his time with just the one bandaged.

The rehab is going slowly but well considering he was incorrectly diagnosed and waited 6 weeks before the op, he walked for 5 weeks then started trotting gradually building up as you would with any horse coming back from injury, most of the exercise has been hacking he is now in almost full work and should be jumping very soon. The physio visits regularly to assess as he was very weak on the injured side, I did lots of different stretches, pole work in hand and encouraged him to use the injured leg as much as he could to build up his strength.

that's really helpful thanks :) I only bandage his front legs at night as he has a tendency to be a prat in his stable and cut himself but will take the front ones off in the day and leave the backs on for a few weeks to keep it supported I think!

My horse had a fractured splint bone in may pieces. We were advised box rest for 3 months. Back bandages behind full time front ones just at night, only because it was during Nov/Dec/Jan.

There was a long scar which healed well though it left its mark. Horses leg always filled over night but went down in the day. No hindrance or disability and horse returned back to work(eventually).

During the following months after box rest horse was kicked 3 more times in the month after box rest 2 x on the injury site, so I said right until we move to our home she will stay on box rest.

I would leave bandages on full time over the injury site for the couple months and the front ones off during the day.

My pony had a fractured splint bone on his hind and had to wear a soft cast for 10 weeks he did not have an operation.

Then had a month of time on the walker building up to 40 minutes twice a day as well as small paddock turnout starting out with 5 minutes and building up to a few hours. He had just over 3 months off before I could start riding him again. He went to a specialist rehab yard for his box rest and recuperation and has made a full recovery.
