pretty pointless post really but i just had to share!

why do horses feel like they have to test us? i took Frankie out for a hack last night, i have been having confidence issues with him out on the roads, nothing major just he can be quite spooky which in turn spooks me! anyway thought id take him out cus i thought i had to sometime, keeping him in the school would just make him worse.

he was a little angel the first part of the way, i even walked him on a loose rein, and had no butterflies. he even walked past a fallen tree with no issues; i even enjoyed myself! then when we were about 10 minutes away and he started jogging, spooking at nothing and his neck shortened by about 5 inches! i wouldn't worry so much if we were in the country but i ride near main roads! he wasn't strong by any means, he would stop when asked but was very uptight.

he was like jekll and hyde! sorry for the rant i just wanted to know that im not alone!

you can also give rescue remedy to horses it works a treat for stopping mine sweating up when traveling!! - sorry didnt intend to make fun of your fear - i am always in fear with my spooky nappy pony so i do understand and sympathise i was just having a mad moment x

hehe no i know you're not making fun i did think when i was out riding last night that if he was a donkey it would be boring!!

havent tried rescue remedy, could give it a go though cus i do get nervous and my whole body does not just my stomach! it is annoying because i have ridden horses like him before, just not next to a busy main road with lorries on it and stuff!

i have managed to 'cure' at fair bit of my nerves (as i told bex1984) by taking 'kalms' and investing in a balance strap across attached to the d rings at the front of the saddle i hold the reins with one hand an the strap with the other and it seems to stop the tense feeling that you get in your arms/hands that transfers to the horses mouth and somehow has managed to keep my pony calmer at difficult times - give it a try (£10 from frogpool manor - online) x

thats the hard bit bex1984 - i actually have to 'tell ' myself to hold it but once you are latched on its ok - although when she spooks my automatic action is to let go and grab the reins! But the good thing is the spooks are less often with me holding the strap!

I think it must be the name frankie! My Frankie is very spooky on the roads (but very good in heavy traffic) its so annoying as i know he isnt really scared of it. I hack him out 5 or 6 times a week and its soooo frustrating, he has areas he will shy in and parts of a ride he wont, cant smack him as then he will spook at EVERYTHING - you are def not alone!

that sounds just like him aimee! he's fine walking in the traffic, just starts spooking at stupid things like bushes. then if i get mad at him cus i know hes not scared really it makes him worse.

*repeat to self, must not get frustrated must not get frustrated*

i need to move him somewhere with less traffic methinks!
