Jasper, 18mo working cocker, has come back from a long walk & just can't settle . He keeps lying down, then gets up runs round in circles & throws himself down again. He just looks uncomfortable. Have checked his paws & nothing obvious. Nothing untoward happened on the walk, apart from losing his favourite dummy. Any ideas?

I agree it sounds like stinging nettles, hope he is fine now. They could be coming through but you might not necessarily be able to see them yet.

I would go with stinging nettles- I'm keeping an eye on my whippet as he gets very upset by these, lots of frantic digging on the carpet and pacing round the house. As rubbish as it sounds, I use some anti-itch stuff from Pets at Home, and just keep re-applying it until he's calmed down, which is usually about 30 minutes. I'm also going to try to keep some bicarbonate paste in the fridge, as its also supposed to be good (alkaline to counter-act against the acid nettles)

No piriton. He does seem to be settling a bit now.

I currently have a puppy who's franticly digging into his bed, and as your wee woofer, and as other have suggested, 'stung pads' is the most likely reason. I suspect that dishing out chemicals for a perfectly natural reaction to Nettles, is rather going overboard, as the start of the meds taking effect will probably coincide with the end of the burning!

Alec.

I thought spaniels were meant to be frantic….

As Keith Erlandson once put it, " ….sent from Hades to torment mortal man with red hot coals for eyes…."

Maybe that's just an old fashioned idea!
