Anyone got any experience of recovery from this please? My youngster has just come off over 3 months of box rest and I have the vet coming out today because she still looks quite lame to me on the concrete, although not noticeable in the field. The last x ray showed it was healing but has anyone had experience of their horse still being lame when they first come of BR?

Worried my baby is not going to get better !:(

Quite often lame up to 3 months, some times still lame after 6 months but make a full recovery.
Obviously the nature of the fracture is the important factor.
If you have the x-rays post them up be good to see.
I see 3 or 4 a year, nearly all recover if the joint or more importantly the articular surface isnt involved.

My older mare fractured her pedal bone about 7 years ago. Actual fracture healed well but she did have some issues with impar ligament and navicular bursae (identified with MRI) which required additional treatment and rest. Once that was sorted she progressed really well and has been fine ever since. Hope you sort it out.

We had a jumping pony that fractured both hinds when she double barrelled a concrete wall.

She had four months box rest & then two months with restricted turnout (tiny paddock for 3-4 hours a day) before being brought back into work over another three months.

I was very concerned whether she would she would return to sj as she wasn't a 'nice' childs pony & did consider PTS, but the vet was very confident that most cases do well.

She did make a full recovery & went on competing for another four or five years until she was in her late teens.

Very good luck with your youngster.

Our tb mare trod on something and fractured her pedal bone, made a full recovery but she was lame for quite a while after..

The late, great showjumper Ryans Son fractured his pedal bone as a young horse. He then went on to become one of the most important horses in John Whittakers career and general crowd favourite. Time is the best healer for this kind of injury. Try not to worry too much x

Thanks guys, she was x rayed Monday again and it showed that the fracture is healing nicely and nothing siniser going on.

Her foot was a bit manky from standing in 3 months I guess, odd how its only affected the bad foot. The vet cut away the crap and asked the blacksmith to cut more than normal off the hoof wall and put a support shoe on.

She's getting checked again today and he's hopeful that she will have improved.

He did say that with a wing fracture they can remove the nerve without causing any ill effect but that's a worst case scenario if she doesn't come sound but you've all calmed my fears.

I loved Ryan's Son so that's given me much hope ! :D
