Tally goes jumping!

Fready blew up in fairly spectacular fashion on Tuesday after weeks of foot perfect behaviour. He lost his mind going for a walk with another horse, and I had to get off because I got fired off, and then he reared quite a few times. Although he was back to normal by the next day, I decided that, actually, I'd prefer to take Tally.

However, Fready is going nicely on the flat:

We also had this happen: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/65774589/enormous-blaze-in-west-christchurch (my horses were on the opposite side of the golf course but the fire was moving towards the city) so I spent the afternoon with my horses *just in case*. It is very very dry now:

As it turns out, I did make the right choice in taking Tally. He behaved impeccably (he didn't even buck!) and raced around double clear in the 75cm and the 85cm. He actually won the 85cm as I let him go full speed in the jump off. It was also extremely windy so I couldn't actually see the last four jumps as I had a face full of arena sand. However, Tally had already figured out the course so took all the inside corners with great glee. He also won the prize for style to my great amusement. We had a rail in the 95cm but it was an unlucky corner. He hasn't jumped that height in over a year so I was very happy with how easily he did it.

He also managed to consume two slices of pizza, some potato chips, half a raspberry muffin, and four "good behaviour" carrots which he was very pleased about. The most amusing part of the day, however, was my friend telling her friends all about Tally and how badly behaved he was and they actually didn't believe her. "No but seriously, he bucked me off once and LAUGHED at me."

(I can't believe he'll be 21 in the middle of this year!).

So plans for the next bit: jumping lessons for Fready and I, hopefully some unregistered dressage for Fready, and a 10 km trek next weekend for Tally!

It's now been declared a drought for Marlborough, Canterbury (where I am), and Otago, so it's very dry. The small amount of rain we have had has definitely not been enough.

Fready is a nice sort and he was such an easy horse as a 5 year old. Unfortunately, as a 6 year old, he's turned into a rather arrogant prick (from stories I have heard, his "meltdowns" were fairly legendary at the track as well!). We're slowly coming out the other side but occasionally, he loses his mind. His redeeming features are he's a decent mover and he's pretty. When he's behaving, he's lovely.

Then again, I had this for many years and he's (finally!!!!) mellowed.
