Free blood test voucher to test for Cushings!

Thanks for posting, i have just checked with a local vets and they are honoring the vouchers :-)
i was only saying a few days ago i am concerned about one of my older mares and cushings so it's perfect timing :)

Thank you so much for this!

Had my boy tested 2 years ago at great cost (over £100) which came back negative but have not been convinced as his coat is awful and his back is a bit dippy.

Printed my voucher just waiting for my vets to call back and let me know whether they are honouring them this year :)

I've just had my exmoor tested. All clear. You do have to pay for handling fee's, call out fee and the actual blood test. Only the testing of the blood is free. cost me £37.

BUMP
this offer is for April AND MAY
hoping a couple of my guys will be tested on thursday when the vets out.

Oakhill are honouring the vouchers.

I had my old boy tested last month. He took blood on Thurs am and he phoned me with the results on Fri pm!

Started on medication on Sat am....:p

I had my mare tested last week and am awaiting the results. I lost my previous horse (only 14 yr old) to cushings related lamintis 10 years ago this month so sincerely hope history won't repeat itself (current horse is now 14).

Thought I'd bump this up so that more people get the chance to see it.
My mare's test came back positive :( and she has now started on the medication. She was showing no obvious signs so if the test offer had not been available I probably wouldn't have had it done.
If anyone is having any doubts about whether their horse has it I would urge you to get the test done.
Thanks to OP for posting this.

Bugger - it's only valid for the first test. I was hoping it would be for any - My Shettie has had 2 tests so far and we're just trying to get him stable on his meds. Costing a fortune! :(

Cobrastyle - another thank you! My vet's coming re. a different matter anyway on Wednesday so have just asked if my older horse can be tested while she's here. Vet's sec. is just looking into it for me. Suspected old mare's showing signs, particularly in coat, for several months now and would be great to know for sure even if mild at this stage.

Incidentally the voucher's valid for tests up to and including 30th June.

Can someone explain what the process is for my numpty self (website confuses me!). My boy is out on loan but I would like his loaner to have him tested (obviously I would pay) - their local vet pops round once a month, do I just need to ask her to ask the vet to do a blood test and then she posts it to the lab, or does the vet post it to the lab?

I'm sorry to hear that :( At least forewarned is forearmed and you can be proactive in her treatment plan :)

The vet would send it off, I imagine :) As surely they'd have the right packaging etc for blood vials. Don't quote me though!

Bumping this up as my old boy had blood taken Monday and I was given the results today which was that he tested positive :(

At least I know and he can get started on the medication

You print the voucher off and give it to your vet when they come and take the blood (check your vets are honouring them first)

Voucher only valid until end May

Bloods taken, now awaiting reply.

shellonabeach, the actual voucher small print states: This blood test voucher can only be used at your local veterinary practice and must be used between the 1st April to the 30th June 2012 inclusive (the qualifying period).

Oops my bad thought it was to 1st June but as my voucher has gone I didn't have it to hand!!

Although I suspected, which is why I made use of the voucher offer, that my dear oldie was showing signs of Cushings I didn't expect the results I received back today - positive with an ACTH reading of 397 (apparently normal is 29 or below). So....here begins a new chapter in my world of ownership. Never owned a cushings horse before. Now awaiting a prescription for Prascend online. Googling I'm going for vetmedsplus at 92p a tablet. Any advance on this? Cheapest I could find.

Holy moly! That's a high reading. I thought my old boy's 200 was impressive!

The Yahoo group is very helpful and has pages and pages of articles.

92p is a good price. My vet does £1.50 a day, so I'll go your route next time.

I got mine from here. Slightly cheaper. They were fine to deal with. You E mail your prescription as an attachment. Try and get a prescription for the largest amount you can then you will have fewer prescription charges.

Sorry to hear of your results. There seems to be an awful lot of it about.

Thanks for the recommendation paddy555, by far the cheapest so have ordered.
Oberon, paddy's link will no doubt be useful for you too as works out at 85p/ tablet (pack of 160). Would be very interested to hear if the next blood sample for your gelding is decreasing reasonably, do post!
Have joined the Yahoo group too so thanks for that - looks as if it'll answer loads of questions as they crop up.
shellonabeach - hope your horse improves on meds too.

Aye, very handy link.

I tried to persuade the vet to take the blood this month rather than wait for the 2 month mark, but he wasn't into the idea.

I'll post when I have the level in June.....

Yeah, the vet usually sends it off. The blood is spun down and only the plasma sent off for the cushings tests.
