Had a text from friend of instructor.Horse on her yard going for free!! Complete with tack rugs etc.Well know to her over a period of about 5years and sounds ideal for me!! Got to sell current one and the usual caveats apply obviously but worth a look anyway.

A friend of mine gave her horse away, he had been advertised for months and all the time she was paying livery, a few unsuitable people came to try him and in the end it made more sense to give him away to a really good home and stop paying livery than carrying on with advertising. Very sad.

Well found out.In short 15 years old and on full livery.Owner feels no profit from advertizing.Doesn't want another horse, just a good home for this one.Everything good quality. Not for me as CAN be a little sharp and spooky.Perfectly safe in the right hands which are not mine.He is in Cheshire so p.m me if interested and I will give contact numbers.

Sounds fair, I would still want to get it vetted. I got my girl in the same way, she was 18 not an easy ride and was just costing livery fees.

I don't there is such a thing as a free horse, they are all going to cost you a heap of money one way or the other

I've had two horses given to me over the years. Both of them had their problems, but were by no means insurmountable. I would definitely say get it vetted. But certainly, around where we live it is not unusual for horses to change hands for a quid or the cost of a vetting.

I was given a free 15 yr old gelding. He was the best horse I've ever owned, only cost me £300 in vets bills in 19 years (apart from jabs) and was 34 when he died.

I never had him vetted, he came with two saddles and a bridle, and although he hadn't done much when I got him, together we did working hunter, SJ, pleasure rides, showing and hunted (once!)

I got him because he wasn't suitable for what he was bought for, and the owner was over-stocked but never seemed to sell any of his horse on - they were all kept/loaned out if the owner couldn't use them.
