Free horse

I suppose if people are desperate its better to give them away to the right home.

You do have to be careful those, there are always the dodgy people that will lie and hide things.

Basically thought you get what you pay for so if you get a free horse you cant expect much!

Its sad but most of the horses being given away have problems, kids ponies not suitable for children, older horses that are expensive to keep being offered as companions.. Its a vey sad state of affairs..

Simple fact is why would anyone take on an old or unsound horse when they can buy a healthy one for a few hundred quid...

Unfortunately, due to a credit crunch, people can't afford to keep their horses and are desperate to give them away. I think most charities are also almost full to bursting. :(

Its al peoples problems that are free, old ones, unrideables, ponies.. why would you risk keeping something that has no use? with the current hay situation etc. very harsh but true.

i think on most of those links it would be kinder to have the horse/pony pts

The older horses 'free to a good home' really piss me off.
Damn owners who think they are too kind to PTS, but not quite kind enough to step up and honour their responsibilities. I think they need to grow some balls and either care for them or make a decision.

I find it frustrating when u see stallions free to good home, that's very irresponsible. And wild ponies people have obviously brought with a view to rescuing without the first know how of how to deal with a wild pony. Wish all people had some common sense! It's the oldies I always feel really sorry for its amazing how many u see free to good home presumably because they are at the end of their useful life and costing. Realise not everyone's reason.s are the same some fall on really hard times and really do have no choice but sadly some are just mean!

Before we go all downer on these free horses, at least these advertisers look to be pretty honest. Somewhat refreshing given I bought a horse that was supposed to be rested for 6 months and brought back to work SLOWLY after a massive shoulder injury, yet the owner had a video of all 17 stone of her trying to canter him right into the corner of a school and being a novice she wasn't a light rider either.

Financial situations are very tight but some of these horses could actually be very genuine and you all know with a change of owner and scenery could be all some of these "naughty" horses need to chill. Mine was kicking, biting and chasing his last owner round the field. He's a complete bombproof softy teddy bear with me. Oh and I didn't get him for free.

If I was in the awful position of having to get rid of Sleeps, I'd rather he went to a wonderful home for free rather than 2 grand in my pocket and he went to hell.

Just cos they're free doesn't mean PTS.

Got to agree with Shils. B******ds have their fun then callously dump them. That really makes me fume

I shouldnt complain really, i got Mysti free to good home and shes got no problems that effect me! Shes got a deformed jaw thats not visable from the outside and she cant take a bit comfortably but it doesnt affect her eating at all! ;)

Shes a fab little pony and only 6, but i can see why people might consider her dangerous, shes very highly strung and a bit odd in the head bless her! The biggest problem ive had with her is once or twice in the 10 months ive had her shes reared up while leading, but shes a young welsh a .. :p But overall shes the sweetest most loving mare ive ever met. She wants to be with you 24/7 she follows you around the field and i couldnt imagian my life without her now! :D

But yes, old horse free to good home annoy me!

I know how that others are feeling the pinch too but like me are determined to get through. I dont know how people can just give away their pets like that. I couldnt part with mine. Really sad for the horse/pony involved tho.

Totally agree with Shils - these type of adverts make me fume! and as for THIS one.....

"Bombproof pony free to good home must go asap due to change in circumstances, no fault of his own. He is 11hh 2yrs 3months old welsh sec a colt. Good in everyway catch, box, feet, load, clip etc. Gets on with all horses. Wears full tack and ridden by young children will make super first pony. Delivery not available no timewasters!"

It's a 2yr old colt, FGS! Bombproof? Ridden by young children? Lets hope some idiot doesn't come along and think " What a lovely pet for my 3yr old, they can grow up together, it's only little, it can live in the garden, my little one can ride it round - they'll have sooo much fun! ............... Oh dear, my Little One is broken, best give away the nasty horsie to someone else to play with." :( :(

It makes me a bit cross.. I opened up the 26yo one and if you cant look after your old horse then at least have the decency to PTS rather than pass on to a home where you dont know what is going to happen

Shilasdair,

spot on.

Alec.

Sad isnt it.I dont think older horses should be passed from piller to post unless you know exactly where it is going and will have a good permanent home.

my mare was given to me at 4, for free with all her tack and rugs. I can understand why they classed her a "problem" but really all she needed was someone who'd keep at it and now every comments on how sweet she is, how strong our bond is and how well she is doing.

oh how awful- the poor 26 year old boy, who cause he can't be ridden anymore is being given away!!!

it sounds to me from the advert he was ridden until recently as well, and he really doesn't look happy in the pic!

It's horrible! :(
I have just been to see an exracer who was brought damaged, nursed back to health and then the owner said he would be put down if he didn't find a new home by the end of the month! it's just horrible how people treat some of these animals!

Seeing adverts like these make me feel so sad. Some of these horses have problems that could be fixed with time and it upsets me to think that the very people that are supposed to love and care for these poor creatures are not willing to give that to them.

For example, the horse that was being sold as unrideable because of a lack of back muscle. With pessoa work, plenty of stretches and a decent, well fitting saddle, its a problem that would take him to fix but would be sorted in the end. It sickens me that people are not willing to put that time and effort in and reap the rewards of having a happy, healthy horse at the end and would simply rather just get rid.

The older horses would possibly be better off being PTS. Elderly horses being given away as light hacks or companions so easily fall into wrong or inexperienced hands. There was a report in a regional horse magazine where I live a year or so ago now written by a lady who works for RSPCA and found a horse in its late twenties just dumped in a field, severely emaciated and distressed as was being used as a companion for another horse who was in better condition. What was the owners response regarding the elderly horse's appalling condition? "Its not rideable so its not like it matters."

Simply disgraceful.

the last ones so sad :(

people need to do righ tby their horses- if you cant afford them pts. (oldies and ones with problems)....

dont fob them off on other people or rescue centres.

the sad thing is that wether you pay 10k for a horse, or have it free, it can still end up in the wrong hands, or no hands - before i bought our latest TBx mare I was looking to give one a good home from a charity or free to good home (for life) and couldnt get anything, so thats equally frustrating as I was offering a 5 star home for life. So I bought our 2nd mare for 650.00, at 3 and unbroken and she will be with us forever, but i cant help thinking that somewhere there might have been a free horse that I could have really helped....difficult isnt it x

Totally agree.

Sadly, I think there will be more free/very cheap horses being offered, what with the credit crunch, people losing their jobs and the rising costs of hay and grain. Giving a horse costs nothing, having them PTS is not cheap.

I just don't understand this at all. How can you spend the time, money (and sometimes heartache) of bringing them back from the brink and then in the next week just kill it? Because let's not be tippytoeing around this, just like the vet on the panorama prog said in relation to healthy dogs - it's murdering these animals.

Double edged sword... wish we had our own place but then we'd still not have enough room for all the horses we'd rescue. How we ended up with 3 dogs, maximum we could responsibly look after...

some of these are genuine reasons but some are kinda silly, couldnt you get someone to teach ur horse manners? they obv dont love the ponies but some are nice about it as they tell stuff about the pony :) i would love a free pony but i wouldnt buy it as there will prob be something wrong with it!

I know it's horrible, they were totally out of their deepth with the horse in the first place! He is back to full health now albeit a little underweight and can come back into work.
I am going to give him the second chance he needs, as I went to visit him and fell head over heals. He will be with by the end of this week :D

I have just found a new home for my 9yo pony gelding who does not like to be ridden. I did not advertise him as free as I did not want the wrong type of person replying. I picked the person who sounded as if she would give him a long-term loving home with company. Only then did I say he was free.

He goes tomorrow and I can only hope I have made the right decision. You never really know what is going to happen in the future.

I have also sold a 4yo pony for just £500 who is worth more. I am looking at the high hay prices for the winter!

I am not a dealer, just someone who bought ponies at sales when I felt sorry for them! The above two I have had for several years.

Also have a 2yo idx filly which I would be willing to swap for a M&M/cob type but most offers have been for colts and I haven't the facilities for one.

My circumstances have changed over the last few years so cannot afford to keep them all. I feel I am being responsible in reducing numbers to benefit the remaining ponies.

Oh fantastic. One more happy ending. You'll have to post pics and let us all know you get on :)

Will do :) He will be taking life slowly, as his injury was to a tendon on his fore left leg. So we will be having an easy life and coming back into work slowly!
The pics I have aren't the best to put on the forum as he is underweight in them. He will look alot better with feed and hayledge inside him :D
