Free horse

It makes me really cross, almost all of those ads, if the owner would either put in a bit of effort or show some sense i.e. geld colts, feed and exercise correctly, pts oldies, here would be no need for this. While I know some of these horses will fall into good hands, realistically the opposite will be true for most of them. Most people will have enough trouble feeding the horses they've already got this winter.
Sadly I think we'll probably see a lot more of this as the year wears on.

Damn owners who think they are too kind to PTS, but not quite kind enough to step up and honour their responsibilities. I think they need to grow some balls and either care for them or make a decision.
Gah.

Same here. A few years ago I was out of a job and in huge debt and my parents, who had helping me keep Fleur, also had a financial crisis. We discussed the situation and agreed that if I couldn't afford to keep her I would have her PTS. I'd had her since she was 10, she was now 23 and was never going to do anything more than a little bit of schooling and hacking to keep her ticking over. Luckily I had some incredible (non-horsey!) friends who knew how much I loved Fleur and each chipped in £10 a month to cover her livery until I finally got a job a few months later. I was incredibly lucky to have those friends, but I know that if I didn't I wouldn't ever have let her be passed from pillar to post as a companion. She wouldn't have known what she'd done wrong to make her mummy give her away.

Sign of the times.......I gave away a TB once - it was given to me and I couldn't take him to a livery yard as he was a rig, took a little while but found a lovely home for him, If he hadn't found a home he would have been PTS.
There's one advertised locally which is 27 years old - that i'm not sure is fair...sounds sick but I have a "shotgun" savings account that has enough in it to pay for PTS and disposal should any of mine need it. My cob mare had a dreadful start in life and isn't sellable, so if I was unable to care for her she would be destroyed, it wouldn't be fair to pass her on.
That said however there are many ponies in their early 20's that can still lead useful lives, but I wouldn't want to give one away, but then again, if it's a choice between keeping your home or a horse.....well.....

I've always said I'd rather pts than sell on or gift my mare, she's only 17 but does need careful management and it would be the only way I could guarantee her future if I could no longer keep her.

Saying that, my friend gave away a cracking 18 year old pony as she developed an allergy to horses. She didn't advertise him, but found someone by word of mouth. Luckily he has ended up in a great home so it can have a positive outcome sometimes; although he had nothing wrong with him and could be ridden which helps.

Aww. It is sad. The first little pony who had been naughty just to many times to stay :(

I hope they all find good homes, i'm sure the owners want good homes for them. Hope so anyway.

ETA If I had my own land, I dread to think how many waifs and strays I would have there! I would end up with a sanctuary :D
