I've read warnings on other forums about people advertising their dogs as 'free to good home' in Loot etc and the dogs ending up being used as bait dogs for training fighting dogs. I can hardly believe people would do it but then I can't believe a lot of what people do to dogs.

My question is, there are 2 dogs advertised as free to good homes in my local paper this week, a sharpei cross and a greyhound, both good 'bait' dogs I would imagine. I am desperate to phone the numbers and warn them and I don't know what's stopping me other than I worry about the response. What would you do?

I was chatting to an owner with his 2 spaniels over at the local park the other week and he was telling me how he caught 2 chaps 'cat coursing' with their staffie. It bolted into him sending him flying and grabbed hold of his spaniel, luckily by the harness and he scared it off.

That's the scum of today the police have to contend with. :(

Meant to say yes I would call them to warn them. It wouldn't occur to some people what goes on.

I would/have done, I rang someone with an entire Dob bitch free to good home and told them it would attract puppy farmers. I tried to give them the no of Dobes rescue places but they were not well pleased.

I with-held my no and you are never going to meet these people so dont worry, you can always pm the no and I will ring. I have a thick skin.;)

I have tried to ring them both but only got an answerphone so will try again. Now I'm worried that if I get a snotty 'mind your own business' type answer I'll end up with 2 more soddin' dogs!

I would call, all you have to deal with is an earbashing, the dogs, much worse. Well done, glad people are starting to sit up and take notice of this.
Not just bait dogs, but breeding dogs and dogs for shysters to sell on at a high price (maybe not the greyhound but the other one certainly).

I sometimes call people advertising GSDs for free and warn them of the risks, e.g. guard dogs, breeding machines, and give them details of GSD rescue. Some people are grateful, others give the impression that they don't give a damn.

Oh and Kao, really good to see you back on here. :)

Why is this world so sick?? My immediate thought is that a big charity should make folks aware of this practice, but i suppose with their doors at bursting point they could do without the extras. Any thoughts? I truly believe people should know as so many, many people will remain totally ignorant of this.

Thanks so much :D my name was nabbed so Cayla thought up a kinda newer 1 for me :p

I ended up with my much loved EBT (RIP) as he was returned to the breeder as deaf. You can imagine what would happen to an EBT advertised free to good home so he spent a good ten years making me and the oh run around after him!

It's these that wind me up:

We will rehome any un wanted husky puppies up to 12mts

We are experenced husky handlers and wil rehome any unwanted female huskys up to 1 year old. Even if they have been hurt or injured. They will be looked after and we do not breed.

We have a beautifull boy who loves to play so they must like other dogs.

Please e-mail or ring

We do not breed my arse. I've actually seen a few specifying 'unspayed females only' and they still have the gall to say that they won't breed. If there's an email address I tend to rattle off a breed specific rescue but only once has anyone replied (the skinny husky, if you remember her, and she was rehomed via a breed forum :)).

There was a female staffy free to good home advertised locally last year - the advert stated she was aggressive towards other dogs. I rang the number and gave them the name and number of the local staffie rescue saying she was in danger of being used for fighting. OMG did I ever get screamed at  I hung up in the end :(

On the other hand Sandy was free to a good home and I know there are several people on here who have had free dogs so there are happy endings out there, jsut not enough.

I hate the ones that that have a bitch in heat wanting a male dog. Not too fussed on breed etc. Their dogs WANTS to be a mum before shes spayed etc

I have started to see some Rottweiler owners asking for Saint Bernards and English Mastiff dogs for stud.
I love Dylan (rott x saint) but as far as I was aware he was a accident, I would hate to see people start making him to a designer breed hes very full on in yer face with an appetite of both the saint and the rott put together I think ;D . Hes loving and gives brilliant cuddles, but I can see why young Rotts go into rescue.

Just to add Teal and Will were free to good homes through here. Teal is now attached to my hip (he would come to work with me if he could, I dont think a hospital is safe for a dog lol) and Will, well what do I say,if anyone wonders if they want to rehome oldies Will, will confirm it for you :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I took on an oldie 2 years ago, she's 15 now. Best dog I've ever had.
I would've been put off taking on an oldie before her. But she's really helped to change my mind :D

Update! I got hold of the shar pei owner who hadn't heard of bait dogs but said that the dog had already gone on a trial basis to a very genuine lady with children down in Bournemouth but not managed to get hold of the greyhound owner yet.

I might contact the paper and ask them to maybe put an article in the paper about it in the hope it might put some people off. This is a new thing isn't it? I don't remember seeing free dogs advertised before.

that's great news :D
definitely see more free to good home ads now than a few years ago, but still used to see at least 3 or 4 a month. Usually they'd be real 'problem' dogs tho.
