Free to good home... at 28 years old.

Exactly. And if you can't afford to keep said oldy and provide appropriate medication and management for the ills that come with old age, do the decent thing and have it PTS.

P

But of course....at around £400 to destroy or PTS....it's easier to pass that cost on isn't it! I am pretty sure most of the horses that deserve a peaceful ending and their future guaranteed simply get passed on as people dont want to pay! I could hardly afford it either but I knew it had to be done!

GRRRRRR people who do this really annoy me, it is so irresponsible and cruel for the horse....

I took on a old pony like this a few years ago, same breed as well and I love the old guy to pieces but would never pass him on ago. I just couldn't do it but good homes are out there as well as the bad. Such a shame the owners can't provide a stable home for the old girl now she's old

I don't really know how people like that sleep at night. I didn't have a horse I could properly ride for around 7-8 years because my old girl was living out her life in full livery and I couldn't afford a second one (I lost her when she was 35). Obviously we don't know the exact circumstances, but even so..... :(

I so agree with this, my last old chap I could not ride for several years but again could not afford another one, so he just lived a happy life till the age of 31. I just could hot live with myself but that's just me, everyone is different .

I hate these ads too. A better solution is to find a sharer for an old horse. I was the lucky and blissfully happy sharer of an elderly mare - I was old myself and convalescent, so mare and I gave each other TLC with some fresh air and exercise. But the horse's retirement, vet bills and end of life remained the responsibility of the owner.

This would be a good solution and I would possibly be happy to take one on under those conditions. Would be interesting to see what this lady would say if offered a home on that basis.....

We all get periods of our lives where time-wise something has to give but its coincidental this has happened as the mare needs to be retired, if there was a genuine lack of time I (if I were the owner) would be clarifying this in the advert as much as I could as currently at the moment it does look like this lady is simply trying to palm off an oldie

Cruel - at that age much kinder to put to sleep. Some ruthless person could get hold of this and try and get a couple more years out of it, at least if you PTS you know the horse is safe. I did this years ago to a mare of 13 and she fell into very bad hands, I did get her back but she had been through the mill and I can never make that up to her, she has now been PTS which is what I should have done in the first place and not thought that the world is full of lovely fluffy honest people who love horses and treat them with kindness and love. A lot of people see horses as a commodity to used, broken and moved on, its taken me a long time to learn that lesson.

Wonder if its a typo and she is 18, seeing as she has been showing for the past 6/7 years

Veteran showing?

I got my old mare (25+) because her old owner didn't want her and no-one would buy her, she approached me and asked me to put the mare through the sales for her so I bought her myself...We had a few years hacking and veteran showing before time finally caught up with her and I did the right thing by her.

I know that ads like this have been highlighted before... but it really doesn't seem quite right to me.

I hope that it works out OK for the pony.
Not directed at you, Faracat.

If SHE (or he) isn't willing to keep HER 'pride and joy' in happy retirement for the rest of her days WHAT makes her think that someone else is??? It would be great if the mare does find a forever home, but I doubt it.
Also, everyone who now says to me 'oh, she can be a companion' or 'well you never know, someone might'... well, what's stopping YOU from taking her? And all those reasons you give me... well those apply to everyone else as well.
Gah, things like this make me SO cross.

If anyone has anything to say about me or my pony, PLEASE feel free to message me instead of being pathetic stating me on here! Not one of yous has any idea why this pony has to find a new home, its nothing to do with her being old! So before anyone has the cheek to slate me before you have any idea why, please message me first before jumping to conclusions!! She will not be going to anyone & i will be taking great care in finding the perfect home for her!

Im just annoyed that no one has bothered to ask why shes up for rehoming, they just assume i dont want her because shes old, thats not the case atall! Alot of changes has been made which unfortunatley means she cant stay, and she will only go to the best home and i will take care in finding that home for her because i know there are decent homes out there

Hi, can I just ask did this pony used to be a riding school pony back in the day? She's very similar to a goldie I knew!

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I don't really care why you want to rehome her, I'm just disappointed that you would do it at all. I feel very sorry for your mare that you can't make time for her and I hope that you find a good home, but I'm not optimistic.

Good luck with finding a good home, unfortunately even the rescue centres are unable to find good homes for lots of ponies, and looking at how it can potentially go wrong and how some people seem genuine at the time, it is a huge risk to pass on an elderly pony like this.

In fairness to hh posters everyone is just concerned about her age and the fact she is free to a good home, they are all animal horsey lovers and lots of horrible things happen sometimes to unsuspecting owners and poor horses so they have every right to question why at her age.

However your reply is still very vague at that, so in reality why should they contact you to find out, when you are just as bad by giving very few details about how things have changed and she cant stay.

Anyway i am not posting to fight, i just hope it all ends happily and she finds a lovely home who will look after her in her latter years in life. Guess it will be upsetting for her having to leave the herd and where she has known behind esp at her age.

Just for the record I took on a 25 y o pony last year - she is not abused. She is pampered and loved by everyone who knows her. She was given to me as her owner was to ill to look after her any more. Not all owners who take on these old ponies are evil sods waiting to abuse and neglect them... Our herd of little ponies may be not scrubbed clean every day but they are fed watered rugged and stabled and see the vet when appropriate and look happy and healthy... Not all homes given to old ponies are bad homes.

Of course there are some good homes out there, but they are vastly in the minority, I'd recommend anyone to go to low end sales and just see how many unwanted youngstock and elderly ponies there are going through, simple facts are that there are more horses than there are homes.

Blitznbobs no one is saying that folk who take on older ponies are cruel, there are very few in this day and age who will take on an older pony, yours was given to you, you didnt go out looking for it and then there is the one who will, well i dont need to go into that.

What I'm trying to say is there is no harm in asking - if you don't get any good bites then you can always PTs then but it could be that there is a good home out there ...

Probably no harm in trying to find a good home, although advertising free is not a route I'd take, possibly someone known to me that I trusted implicitly would be considered; but then you only have to look at how many think they have found the perfect loan home, only to get back an emaciated animal down the line. It isn't something I could do with a clear conscience to an animal of that age.

Im not going to post all my problems for everyone to see!! And fair enough people are concerned but no need atall for this!

It doesn't matter what the reason for giving her away is, the fact is that she is elderly and at huge risk of ending up in the wrong hands. People are concerned for very valid reasons, there really are fates worse than death for some horses.

People actually care about the pony. If you are more forthcoming, you may find that one of the visitors to this thread can come up with a solution.

Along with others, I've rehomed elderly ponies before, the oldest one being on his mid 30s. We kept him for another 5 or 6 years, he became a much loved part of the family.

Try working with the forum, not railing against it.
