Hello,

I'm just wondering how much all you freelance grooms pay for your insurance? I have called SEIB and they have given me a quote of £70 per month, which includes personal accident cover/ loss of earnings. Although it would be very comprehensive and I would have peace of mind, £70 a month sounds v steep and I'd have to be doing a lot of riding to make it worthwhile across the year.

Who do all you freelance grooms that ride as a part of the job?

If I have to go through SEIB, then I'll have to do it but it just seems very steep, especially across a whole year.

Agreed, a loss of earnings policy is not cheap, especially in a high risk job like horses.
I'm surprised it's as cheap as £70,
My income protection policy is £120 a month and that's for a desk job!

I guess my issue is that I'm not going to be doing that much riding, so I guess I'm just thinking, if I start paying out for this, I probably won't be making that much, if anything for riding. But I have 2 people wanting horses schooled ATM and one hacked, neither of these are long term, but I can't do it without the insurance really. Hmm, maybe I'll just quit doing anything ridden altogether.

maybe ask for a quote without the personal accident cover and "take your chances" if it's only going to be short term. I have insurance through the register of instructors (or APC as it is now) which allows me to be insured as a groom but i'm pretty sure it doesn't cover personal accident cover.

Look at the British Grooms Association - this is where most grooms now get their bespoke and discounted personal accident insurance.

A Silver Membership, which will cover you for up to £250 per week loss of earnings if you were to have an accident, will cost you approx £11 per month.

I have just had a quick look at the link. Its does not cover 3rd party insurance, so if there is an accident and you are found to be negligent you will be fully responsible for costs as I read it, I think you can add it as an extra.

As per stated above, the BGA Insure memberships are personal accident policies - not liability policies.

Not all grooms need liability, as many will fall under their employers and/or yards public liability. So the BGA is careful to ensure that grooms investigate if they need a liability policy prior purchase rather than bulk selling it. Liability policies can be purchased directly with KBIS (although there will be an option to purchase online later this year).

I do think it should be clearer, if you are freelance, self employed you need 3rd party. If you are employed your employer should have their insurance displayed, but how many yards do?
I was very naïve, I was employed but when I fell ill I found out they had not been paying my NI so I was entitled to no sick pay.
