can some one please recommend me a good insurance company for a freelance groom my sister is just going self employed and she did not realise that her BHS does not cover her if she is being paid

thanks

Hi
If your sister is a freelance groom the best insurance for her can be purchased through the British Groom Association. This is a bespoke insurance for grooms that will cover them for everything they do in the line of their job. Be aware that the BHS insurance is NOT suitable for someone that works with horses as it is a recreational policy. BGA membership can be paid monthly and is affordable from just £5 per month.
Hope this helps.

As others have said BGA offer a good option.
If she is qualified then she can join the BHS register of grooms which provides insurance (but yes, as stated, the 3rd party insurance which comes with BHS membership is not valid if you are being paid.

My daughter has freelance insurance through Sheerwater. I think it was about £400 but that covers public liability too.

£400 is what iv been quoted as well, iv done the odd days paid work recently for people and would like to do more but need insurance and £400 ish seems the cheapest. Anybody know any different?

Not all freelance grooms need Public Liability insurance and so each situation will vary depending on your working circumstances. It is worth giving the BGA a call to discuss through your case, (insurance companies will sell to you so best to call an independent source).
Public Liability will cost you circa £400 whichever provider you go with. It is an expensive insurance if you are a sole trader and so it is really worth checking out if you need it or not.

It depends on the circumstances. For example if they were a freelancer that only worked in large yards that employed staff there would be a strong chance that they would fall under the employers (clients) public liability insurance. (it is worth checking this out with the client prior starting the job). Or for example if they worked in yards where they had zero interaction with the public nor chance of interaction with the public then there would be no requirement for their own PL (eg. if they only did stable duties and the yard was based in a country estate).

It is best to talk through your own individual circumstance before purchasing a PL policy. It is also important to note that a recreational PL policy will not cover a groom whilst they are at work.

But what is something went wrong with said horse on the quiet country estate and the owners felt you were responsible, if your freelance you should be covering yourself in case something happens to the horses in your care?

I suggest you talk through your individual case with either the BGA or an insurance provider. You are getting your insurances slightly confused here as firstly if anything were to physically happen the horses in your care Public Liability Insurance is not going to protect you, you would need Indemnity Insurance to protect you against such a claim (which is exceptionally rare).

If you were caring for horses on a country estate and were simply mucking them out and remaining in the boundaries of the yard then you would have no chance of interacting with the public and hence there would be little need for such insurance. Each case/circumstances are different and so it is best to talk it through. Hope that is helpful.
