My yard has approx 30 horses and no groom, it is a DIY yard and has one full livery (dont ask about this as a full livery....please

) who went there in the days of jute rugs!

When we came 2yrs ago, a girl worked on the yard and my contract states that my horse will be fed breakfast and turned out as part of my livery. This has was the case until May of this year when the 'groom' left. Now we have to rely on each other to turn horses out etc. Today, Ralph was turned out into the rain in his stable rug, so that tells you the level of knowledge on the yard!

Does anyone have a freelance groom come to their yard and do stable duties? Its not even worth asking the yard owner as she has no interest and just want an easy life! Your probably asking why dont I just leave, this yard is so near to home/work and despite a few problems, the majority of people are lovely, something I've not experienced for a long time, plus Lumpy is really happy and settled.

Any suggestions

I've never heard of freelance grooms. But could you leave a detailed note on his stable door of what is done with him? Or use colour tags on his rugs to identify which rugs are which - like he goes out in the rug with green tag, stabled in rug with red tag etc...

Sorry I'm not much help!

We have a freelance groom cover at our yard when we are short or if one of the grooms is away at competition with the YO. She was quite easy to find (notice up in a tack shop) and is reliable and knowledgeable.

The only problem you might have is that most will want a minimum period of work, so doing one horse might not be worth their while. Also i know quite a few yards that dont like freelance grooms coming onto the yard (normally because the yard could do it themselves) so make sure you check with you YO first.

Good luck!

My groom is freelance, although is pretty much attached to the yard now, as she has horses there etc.
I know plenty of yards that use them, often they're liveries, but sometimes they just turn up for specific jobs.
I pay £32.50 a week I think for Mon-Fri full livery from the groom.

Can you put an advert up in your local saddlery or horse mag asking for a groom? Considering you're on quite a big yard, there might be other people that would like to use a groom, and make it more worth while for whoever you find.

Having nearly been killed in an RTA, its been difficult for me to get to the yard, today is the first time I have been able to do all my jobs

Yes I have a freelance groom for 2 horses (Monday - Friday) that mucks out, picks up the poos and fills the hay nets. Pay her £60 per week.

My yard is DIY and we have 3 ladies that work there (two are liveries), they aren't employed by the yard so I suppose they are freelance but they don't work anywhere else but my yard. Would one of the liveries not be interested, I often help out on the weekends for a bit of extra cash. Although I do almost everything myself except bring her in its nice to have someone as back up, I would feel very nervous knowing there was nobody to help out at the yard.

I am a freelance groom-but as far as i know the only one in my area!! (which is a far far way away from you -sorry!) I only turnout for 3 regualrs on a big livery yard and occasionally get asked to do one more as and when. Then rest of my clients are private.

I avertise of local feed merchants and tack shops so worth looking there!
