Anyone got any experience of towing with a Freelander 2? Was it up to the job? What is it like (comfort, reliability, fuel consumption, etc.)?

I have no first hand experience but I'm pretty sure that they are not great. I stand to be corrected but I don't think they are heavy enough. I may be wrong though?

I agree that they are probably not heavy enough to tow a double trailer legally and safely. You may be able to tow a lightweight single trailer though.

I actually only have the older Freelander, and it can legally tow 2T, so with my trailer and our 14.1 pony that's about all I will (and can) tow. It does it's job as we mainly tootle around on the flat, to local stuff, but I would not like to still have it once my daughter moves on to horses as its dead sluggish up hills lol I would imagine the Freelander 2s have a bit more oomph to them though?

I have a TD4 with the capacity to tow 2 tonnes, therefore with my IW 505 weight of 908 KG you have enough left to carry 2 small ponies or one horse comfortably.
I have no problem at all travelling my 16.1 Irish Sports horse. I believe he travels comfortably and my Freelander has no problems towing at all - not sluggish either. I would not however carry another horse with him.

my friend has an 03 2lt diesel freelander and tows and ifor and one 15.2 cob x tb which they previously towed with a 07 mondeo and they commented on how easy the freelander towed and how easy it was to manouver it all. i am aware that if you tow to much that freelanders cant cope and fall apart but if you stay within your weights it should be fine, the clutch will go very easily so get an auto if you can!

Thanks for the comments. I only have 1 horse, so was only going to get an HB403 anyway.
Surprised about the comment about auto clutches lasting longer. They usually go quicker than manual ones!

Ive had both the older Freelander and the Freelander 2. Both towed an IW505 with two ponies in, and I used the F2 for an IW511 with my 16.2h in. They were both steady, strong enough, fast enough, braked well, reliable and comfy. Obviously they drink more fuel when towing. As for the car itself, the F2 is fantastic and I shall be going back to one when the day comes I don't need a Discovery to tow a treble trailer. It really is great.
As for trailers - I personally would never buy a single horse trailer - I just think they are not balanced properly and could flip over too easily. I think for a horse it must be like being in a tin coffin. Its always handy to have the extra space inside a double trailer, in case you have to give someone a lift or just for everyday stuff that gets lugged around when you take your horse out to play!

I have same vehicle - with single ifor trailer and its fine - wouldnt want to tow 2 horses in double trailer though did do it once in emergency and it struggled

Depends on make of trailer - mine is ifor and is 2 yrs old now. its only a little narrower than a double trailer and is very stable.

My issue with towing is that people look at the max towing weight of the car rather than the kerb or dry weight. I personally would never tow more than the kerb weight of any vehicle, if you do you are towing more than your vehicle weighs.
Just bear in mind with SUVs (Freelanders, X Trails ect) that the kerb and max leden weight of these vehicles (and nearly the max towing weight!) is the same as a 2.0 Mondeo or Passat so only tow with a SUV what you would tow with a mondeo.
