My freelander makes a banging sort of noise going round corners. it has done it since i bought it a couple of years back, its quite loud - but we went in a freinds 4 x 4 jeep the other day and their car does exactly the same thing! Is it a 4 x 4 thing - does anyone else's make this noise?

Yes - you need to get it looked at. I can't for the life of me remember what its called but you do need to get it repaired. Mine did it mildly, I had it looked at and they did a temp repair but said it would need doing soon. Its not the engine, its the wheels. Oh how annoying that i can't remember what its called. It is quite common ( I mean the fault - not me forgetting)

I would suggest that without any further delay you get the the brake callipers, front wheel bearings, front drive shafts and suspension/shock absorbers require careful checking. A fault of this nature could cause overheating which may in turn cause a complete brake failure if the hydraulic brake pipe ruptuture and the brake fluid escapes as a result of exposure to excessive heat.

We had a Freelander but it never made any knocking noises, in fact it rarely made any noise

Weve never ever had probs with our freelander, its been the best vehicle weve had! Its better on the diesel than our last car!! Ours is a 2002 reg and i swear i never want to sell it.

Hubby is a trained mechanic so it gets serviced regularly, weve never had to fit major parts to it, just the usual brake pads, etc. Its yet to break down - touch wood. Its pulled the horse box like a dream and the heated seats are heaven on my sore back lol.

My W reg Freelander commercial made horrible noises and the tyres were starting to wear down badly. It turned out to the be viscous coupling and it cost me a fortune to get it replaced.
