I think someone had a link to a page that had all the technical info on what cars can tow what.....not sure I could handle a big 4x4 everyday all day so was thinking of the freelander - or does it not have enough guts?

Sorry about hundreds of questions but want to get this right!

Freelander is not a good idea for towing a trailer. To light and not gutsy enough.
Have a test drive in an older Jeep cherokee. I have the 2.5ltr petrol version. Drives like a car but pulls a trailer brilliantly.

I have a freelander but have to say I wouldn't want to tow with it.
I'm lucky tho cos hubby has a discovery...now thats a towing vehicle and if I'm honest I find it just as easy to drive around and park (even the multi-storey in town).I 'm not a very willing tower ... about 5 years ago was pushed down the road when I had to break suddenly whilst towing with an audi estate. Scared me to death!!
When I tow with the disco its hard to tell theres anything attached.

Grand cherokee is OK. It's just bigger ( and more thirsty) than the original cherokee but does still drive well.

Mines just turned over 100,000 miles and still purrs like a kitten and not had any probs with it.

OH i feel really bad that everyone says that a freelander is no good - i have one and towed my old pony about in it -Yes you can only take one - but it was fine and also very ecomomical fuel wise - dont get a petrol one mine is a 2.o diesal - i asked about towing weights the other day on forum as my new pony is slightly bigger/heavier 440 kgs and someone who seamed to know about weights etc said it was fine - we are pretty flat about here though so not many hills - and i have an anti snake bar for added security - so i vote for a freelander if you have limited funds and weekly fuel allowance!

Need to be able to tow two 15.3's though occasionally and maybe even one 17hh and one 15.3.

arrgggghhh - getting confused now.

Someone please give me a list of cars that would tow these two fatties

prob go for a newish trailer so it would be lighter....

There was a thread about this recently, maybe you could check back a few pages or do a search? I've got a Toyota Colorado Landcruiser and that does the job, to tow two horses plus trailer you do need the bigger, heavier type of 4x4, Mitsubishi something, Landrover, Jeeps etc.

OK, I'll have a look.

Think I may just go for a grand cherokee or a discovery - I'll just have to sell my body for the petrol!

Oh my - then you will have to get something bigger - i only have a 14.3 welshie - definatly not a freelander !!!!

Why not look for a big 4x4 that has had an LPG conversion? Save you loads on petrol...

My mum went through 3 Discos in two years they were so unreliable. Under warrenty too. One the drivers seatbelt failed, the other had a leaking roof, and the last one had it's electrics fail. She gave up after that! Heard some not so nice things about them from people at my old yard. Personally I wouldn't touch one with the problems my mum had.

My parents won't touch them either (Discos) something to do with massive gearbox problems. I wasn't allowed(!) by my dad to even think about freelanders!

Test drove the Hyundai Santa Fe - lovely to drive but not enough guts for towing - you'd need a Terracan I think it is... Parents have Kia Sorento, which is a bit thirsty. I have Nissan Navara pick up truck - 2.5 diesel, does just over 30MPG, I love driving it though its a real b*gger to parallel park!!!

Toyotas are supposed to be pretty reliable, and Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajeros are good workhorses.

[/ QUOTE ]Groom on my last yard says he often spends more money on his Disco than his horse! His gearbox failed too. I'd never get one.

On the other hand I've been in a shogun thats lasted years without so much as a hiccup. We even had it submered in water (over the engine) and it was totally fine. They just seem to keep going no matter what! My firend picked up an older one, but there are some good models kicking around.

The Diesels are fine to tow a lightweight trailer - I towed a HB505R with 2 ponies but when I changed to HB510 I had to use a Discovery (I love mine by the way and he's a good boy!). The petrol engines Freelanders are not much cop for towing (I have a 1.8 now), OK to move a trailer of take little pony to local event but wouldn;t advocate much more.

I did think about Nissans actually

I had a nissan terrano 2.7 LWB. I keep my horse where we have huge hills to tow up. This pulls trailer and two horses, a 16.3 and a 16.2 without any problems at all.
I sold it last year as I thought I would never get back into comps, but I now want to get my boy out and about and wish I had kept the car as it was so good, and lovely to drive as well.

I'll second the Nissan Terrano.

I've had two now, both SWB. They easily tow two horses up our steep Devon hills in a 510 IW. I also chose this vehicle as I drive through the city and need to park in very small areas and this is easy to do (usually!)

I'd ditto steering clear of Discos! mine was awful and cosr thousands in overheating! Nightmare!
Get something japanese- I have a Toyota Landcruiser that is just brilliant and costs me nothing to maintain. Also, Nissan or Mitsubishi are fine!
