i had one and i loved it .. had a major problem with the rear diff breaking and then something at the front . cost £1500 to get it repaired. still loved it and i towed fine with it.
i think if you get a good on then your lucky.
i sold mine a few months back due to the cost of running it..
I had a freelander but unfortunatly it was poop looked lovely but that was about it now i have a discovery i i would never look back i can trust it to go anywhere hope this has helped...x
only towed a caravan with it and it was poop, plus , like any landrover, if you get a good 'un you're fine, you get a dud and be prepared to pay out 10 times worth it's value in repairs!! ours was forever getting a problem with the motor on the rear window, normally not a prob but you can't open the boot if the wondow motor goes as the window has to drop and inch to allow the door to open!! had it replaced 3 times before we got shot of the blasted thing
Nope! Don't do it. They can only tow up to about 2000kg - add weight up trailer, weight of horse(s), people in the car, tack, water etc etc etc then you'll soon be up to max. I almost killed the one I had by trying to tow. They are good estate cars, but unless you have a single trailer with a lightweight pony/small horse wouldn't bother. Go for something with a bit more 'grunt'.
they're crap for towing. they dont weigh enough. kerb weight is only 1500kg and you should never tow more than the kerb weight regardless of the vehicle's max towing capacity. most trailers weigh nearly 1000kg so that leaves you 500kg for horse which is less than most horses weigh.
my freelander tows a 506 with two small ponies... you have to be careful about the weights (we've weighed everything and it is do able) however, my freelander has a really good engine and tows quite well so I am lucky its reliable as well.. only pulls 2tonne... however, i would go for a defender over the freelander in the future

are they shetlands? the 506 weighs nearly a tonne unloaded leaving about 600kg for the 2 ponies. yes, the freelander can legally tow 2000kg, but it only weighs 1500kg and personally i would never ever put my ponies at risk by towing a load greater than the weight of the car - too much risk of the tail wagging the dog or being overtaken by the trailer going downhill. i have never understood why people are willing to risk their pride and joy by towing with unsuitable vehicles. i've waited nearly 8yrs to be able to afford a decent 4x4 to tow with. i just hired or didn't go beforehand.
Good for towing but our leaked through the sun roof, the land rover dealership refused to fix it and I would never buy another land rover for this reason. Though apparentl it was a fault with the first freelanders that they sorted, good for them but it didn't help when we tried to flog the damn thing.
