I know everyone says they're rubbish, but just wanted to know why, are they rubbish in towing terms or just generally?! My friends thinking of buying one, so thought I'd ask what they're like cuz I know whenever there are 4x4 posts people always say dont get a freelander!!!

For general driving they are okay but for towing they just do not have the guts to pull anything substantial that a trailer and horses are.I think the towing capacity for the Freelander is only at 1.8 tonnes which an older trailer and one horse is going to be on the limit.

Freelanders 2002 onwards are fine. Petrol engines prior to this had many problems, particularly head gasget failure resulting in complete engine rebuilds or even new engines.
The diesel engines were also too sluggish, but the newer TD4 engines are fine for towing.

The new shape are better - my friend has one and it tows her horse fine but don't think you could tow with two horses in.

I think there are better 4x4s out there and also more reasonably priced ones. Maybe look at the new Kia Sorrento? You also get 7 year warranty which is very useful!

i love mine - its an 05 auto. its the swb and has capacity of 2tonne. It tows no probs at all - i do only tow one horse in a single trailer but did used to have a double trailer and it never struggled.

I love mine! Had my last one for 8 years and got a newer one last week. When we had the snow and ice my village was a death trap but the old Freelander never moved, including towing other cars out of ditches and hedges. Never had any trouble towing with the old one and looking forward to towing with this one

My friend has one - she say's its fine for driving and snow but not so hot for towing. I'd suggest trying a Discovery 3 or 4 as they are very very nice to live with but my Dad's a mechanic and quite a lot have come to him with the headgaskets blown when towing.

Think it's one of those things - if you never have a problem, you're mad about them. I had a Range Rover for a bit - hated it. Felt funny to drive. Got a different one, same model, different colour & interior - loved it.

yes the head gasket on the petrol ones are renowned for being a problem, my friend had hers replaced twice within six months. Never had a problem with towing, although only tow one horse in my trailer. Agree the disco is the best but not as cost effective diesel wise and as I need mine to be multi-functional.

well, I believe the one my friends looking at is 02 reg?! Was curious as to what people thought tho cuz whenever I've looked at 4x4 posts, everyones always negative about freelanders!! Nice to see some positive stuff

Guess its just luck of the draw!!!
