Freeze mark and keeping visible with winter coat?!

Without having to fork out for some expensive clippers as my cob has his natural coat all year round and is never clipped - are there any methods to keep the freeze mark visible/readable in winter now his coat is growing long?

I think clipping may be the only way. Could you buy some trimmers or even human clippers? They'll be far cheaper then proper clippers but should be powerful enough just to clip the freeze mark.

Hand clippers would work as such a small area they are only about £7
